Forty incoming Veteran students attended the full-day orientation event on August 18

BRONX, N.Y. (PRWEB) August 29, 2018

Every year, nearly 500 Veteran students study at Fordham University. Most enter through its School of Professional and Continuing Studies (PCS), which offers programs designed for adult learners. In an effort to ease the transition back to civilian life, PCS recently launched a new transition program for its incoming Veteran students. Forty Veterans were welcomed at an all-day orientation event at Fordham’s Rose Hill Campus on Saturday, August 18.

“The transition from military to civilian life is nothing short of challenging,” said Wesley Wilson, president, Student Veterans Association, Fordham University. “In addition to connecting new student Veterans with resources and services that are beneficial to their ascension to success, this orientation will help ease the anxiety associated with transitioning on a grander scale.”

Studies show that it can be overwhelming for Veterans to adjust to civilian life after service. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, in 2014, rates of suicide were highest among younger Veterans (ages 18-29) and risk for suicide was 22-percent higher among Veterans compared to U.S. civilian adults.

The PCS orientation introduced new Veteran students to a support network of current Veteran students and Fordham staff, to help alleviate the burden of transitioning back to civilian life and the classroom. Students were briefed on the recent changes to the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act (“Forever GI Bill”), which enhance or expand Veterans’ education benefits over the next few years. They also attended presentations on how to take advantage of student life at Fordham, including career services, the writing center, Veteran mentorship and community service opportunities.

Beyond the day’s informational sessions and campus tour, students rang Fordham’s famous Victory Bell, a gift from Admiral Chester Nimitz to commemorate soldiers in World War II that was first rung by President Harry Truman. To conclude the orientation, students joined PCS alumnus, Veteran, entrepreneur and Bronx local Kentavious White (owner of Kens Party Bus and Food Truck) for a tour of Little Italy.

“Fordham is a recognized ‘Yellow Ribbon school. I am proud to say that, this fall, PCS is offering unlimited seats of 100-percent coverage of tuition and fees/expenses for eligible post-9/11 Veterans or their dependents,” said Anthony R. Davidson, Ph.D., MBA, dean of PCS. “As Americans, we owe our Veterans a tremendous debt of gratitude for their service, and we want to support them in every way. That includes always working to remove financial barriers and any other obstacles that may stop them from pursuing a top-rated degree.”

GoPoké, Salads UP and Sugapeach Chicken & Fish Fry will compete in the annual Perfect Pitch competition during the Fast Casual Executive Summit, Oct. 7-9 in Seattle.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (PRWEB) August 29, 2018

Take three unique start-up restaurant concepts, add in four passionate leaders, and top it off with three industry insiders serving as advisers, and you have the recipe for this year's Perfect Pitch — the annual contest we host during each Fast Casual Executive Summit to reveal three of the industry's hottest new brands. This year's Summit is Oct. 7-9 in Seattle with the Perfect Pitch kicking things off on day three.

After sifting through tons of applicants vying for stage time, we chose:

GoPoké — "A taste of Hawaii in Seattle."· Website: gopokeseattle.com
· Founded: 2016
· HQ: Seattle
· Owner: Bayley Le
· Number of locations: 1
· About: Built by three brothers from Hawaii, it serves authentic Hawaiian poke and desserts in the form of fresh Ahi, Salmon, Tako, and Tofu in the form of ready-to-eat rice/salad bowls, pokerittos and by the pound. It also serves shave ice, dole whip and tropical homemade drinks.

Salads UP — "The journey continues, come in and say S'UP!"· Website: saladsup.com
· Founded: 2015
· HQ: Michigan
· Owner: Robby Mayer and Max Steir
· Numberof locations: 3
· About: Created by two University of Michigan graduates looking to bring healthier options to college towns and a brand that resonated with the unique lifestyle of a college student, Salads UP opened in 2015, in Ann Arbor, Michigan on the University of Michigan campus The menu consists of signature and customizable salads and warm grain bowls as well as smoothies and signature juice blends. It now has two other locations in Madison, Wisconsin on the University of Wisconsin campus.

Sugapeach Chicken & Fish Fry — "We want to be the first National Soul Food Restaurant."· Website: sugapeach.com
· Founded: 2016
· HQ: North Liberty, Iowa
· Owner: Chad Simmons and Iowa Soul Food Company
· Number of locations: 1
· About: Founded by Carol "Sweetiepie" Cater-Simmons, Sugapeach's soul food brand offers fish, chicken, baked macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes and gravy, cornbread and collard greens. It offers more than just comfort food, however. It reminds customers of the people they love and the good times they had with them.

The pitchers will address not only the Summit's attendees but also a panel of advisers who will give them advice about how to grow their concepts. It's our "nicer" version of "Shark Tank," which means it's all about helping small but innovative concepts get off the ground. The audience members will vote on their favorite pitch, and the winner will receive bragging rights, of course, and free entry into next year's Fast Casual Executive Summit.

"I am participating in Perfect Pitch to show the leaders and innovators of the ever-growing fast casual industry why Salads UP is well positioned to scale," Max Steir, said in an interview with FastCasual. "Furthermore, I want to use this platform to inform as consumers and industry veterans what makes the S'UP brand so special."

Simmons and Le agreed.

"I'm hoping to learn if our strategy will get our brand noticed by larger fast casual companies, Simmons said. Le's goal is to increase exposure while maintaining "consistency and humility through the process."

S'UP — Steir said — is at a critical juncture. Although it has grown to three units in two years, he and Mayer are unsure of the next path.

"We have a multitude of options when it comes to next steps, and each decision we make will be crucial for our company's future. Therefore, I hope to gain insights on the positives, negatives, and potential challenges that come with different growth strategies. Lastly, I am eager to hear opinions on what elements of our company might need improvement to enhance its long-term health."

Last year's winner was Street Shak Caribbean Kitchen in Toronto, owned by Tony and Karen Bradshaw.

"Be yourself and tell your story. … It's a room of people driven to deliver great experiences. There are long days and of course a roller coaster of emotions because there are constant demands and this business is so personal," Tony said. "It's a craft. It's in our blood. We really just wanted the room to know that despite the ride, we never lose sight of the vision and passion we had before we opened the doors: To celebrate Caribbean food, hospitality, and culture."

Advisers of this year's Perfect Pitch session, sponsored by Lamb Weston, include:

· Susie Fogelson, founder of F&Co. and former Food Network marketing executive
· Melanie Corey-Ferrini, chief experience officer, Dynamik Space

Register here for the Summit. Early bird pricing is in effect until September 7.

Department of Defense Program Office to be Expanded to Durham and Tap Local Innovators to Work on National Security

DURHAM, N.C. (PRWEB) August 29, 2018

The American Underground in Durham is continuing its commitment to supporting military, national security and veteran affairs in recognizing the establishment of a regional presence of MD5.

MD5 is a Department of Defense program office reporting through the Office of the Undersecretary of Defense, Research & Engineering, whose mission is to develop new communities of innovators that solve national security problems. MD5 collaborates with partners from the nation’s major research universities and entrepreneurs and innovators from the venture community to address the real-world problems of warfighters.

The Southeast Region of MD5 will cover the Southeastern US to Louisiana and will be helmed by Tommy Sowers, MD5’s Southeast Regional Director.

MD5 builds on an increased focus from the American Underground to support military and veteran affairs. In June, the AU announced Tim Horan as their first Veteran-In-Residence designed to help Veterans and service members transition from active duty to careers in growing tech companies.

QUOTES
Doug Speight, Executive Director, American Underground
“Creating unique collaborations that serve both veteran entrepreneurs and military innovators are what differentiates American Underground from other workspaces. We engage, create and act in a fashion that mirrors our community."

Tommy Sowers, Southeast Regional Director, MD5
“MD5 looks to connect the venture and academic communities to warfighters to solve national security problems. The Triangle’s density of top public and private universities and the Southeast’s top entrepreneurial ecosystem all within a few hours of the greatest concentration of elite Army, Marine, Air Force and Special Operations Forces, makes Durham the perfect location for our expansion. On August 31, we’ll start proving out what right looks like by connecting these outstanding, elite communities to do good for our nation.”

Tim Horan, Veteran-In-Residence, American Underground
“Our region boasts one of the largest populations of Active Duty Service Members and Veterans in the nation. This concentration of talent and knowledge in both the military and civilian ecosystems overlap and mutually benefit each other in ways unlike other hubs of innovation in the country. The launch of an MD5 at the AU strengthens the partnerships between entrepreneurs and the military.”

New commemorative coins will be available in early 2019

MINNEAPOLIS (PRWEB) August 29, 2018

The United States Mint (Mint) joined the American Legion today at its national convention at the Minneapolis Convention Center to unveil designs for the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coin Program.

The artists in the Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program created the designs that will appear on gold, silver, and clad coins as mandated by Public Law 115-65, the legislation authorizing this coin program. The Mint’s Sculptor-Engravers executed the designs.

$5 Gold Coin Obverse Design
Designer: Chris Costello
Sculptor-Engraver: Phebe Hemphill
This design commemorates the inception of the American Legion and its mission to serve America and its war veterans. The outer geometric rim design from the American Legion emblem, the Eiffel Tower, and V for victory represent the formation of the organization in Paris in 1919 at the end of World War I. Inscriptions are "IN GOD WE TRUST,""LIBERTY,""1919," and "2019."

$5 Gold Coin Reverse Design
Designer: Paul C. Balan
Sculptor-Engraver: Joseph Menna
This design depicts a soaring eagle, a symbol of the United States during times of war and peace alike. The American Legion emblem is depicted above the eagle. Inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,""$5," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."

Silver Dollar Coin Obverse
Designer: Paul C. Balan
Sculptor-Engraver: Renata Gordon
This design depicts the American Legion emblem adorned by oak leaves and a lily, commemorating the founding of the American Legion in Paris, France. Inscriptions are "LIBERTY,""IN GOD WE TRUST," and "2019."

Silver Dollar Coin Reverse
Designer: Patricia Lucas-Morris
Sculptor-Engraver: Michael Gaudioso
The design represents the founding of the American Legion in Paris in 1919. Above the crossed American and American Legion flags is a fleur-de-lis and the inscription "100 Years of Service." Additional inscriptions are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,""1919,""2019,""$1," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."

Clad Half Dollar Coin Obverse Design
Designer: Richard Masters
Sculptor-Engraver: Phebe Hemphill
This design depicts two children standing and reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, the little girl proudly wearing her grandfather’s old American Legion hat. Inscriptions are "LIBERTY,""2019,""IN GOD WE TRUST," and "I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG…"

Clad Half Dollar Coin Reverse Design
Designer: Richard Masters
Sculptor-Engraver: Joseph Menna
The design completes the phrase from the obverse “I pledge allegiance to the flag… of the United States of America.” It depicts an American Flag waving atop a high flagpole as seen from the children’s point-of-view from the ground below. The American Legion’s emblem is featured just above the flag. Additional inscriptions are "E PLURIBUS UNUM and "HALF DOLLAR."

Line art of the 2019 American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coins is available here.

The authorizing legislation for the American Legion 100th Anniversary Commemorative Coins also calls for the Mint to collect surcharges from coin sales—$35 for each $5 gold coin, $10 for each silver dollar coin, and $5 for each half dollar clad coin. The surcharges are authorized to be paid to the American Legion to support the Legion’s programs for veterans, members of the Armed Forces, and other purposes specified by the authorizing legislation.

The Mint will announce the release date and additional pricing information for this coin program prior to its release in early 2019.

World Bank Advisory Council Member Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri Joins Funding Societies as Advisor Appointment of respected macroeconomics expert is intended to support company vision of providing financing access to all deserving SMEs and creating a strong digital finance ecosystem in Southeast Asia

SINGAPORE, Aug. 30, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Funding Societies, the leading peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platform in Southeast Asia, has announced that Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri, a highly regarded economist and member of the World Bank Advisory Council on Gender and Development, has been officially appointed as company advisor. Dr. Basri's expertise and experience in macroeconomics and the regulatory field will serve as valuable support towards Funding Societies' vision: to provide working capital access to every deserving and creditworthy small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) in Southeast Asia.Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri, economist and member of the World Bank Advisory Council on Gender and Development, has been officially appointed as Funding Societies' advisor.

Prior to becoming a member of the World Bank Advisory Council on Gender and Development, Dr. Basri served as Indonesia's 28th Minister of Finance and was a member of the Asia Pacific Regional Advisory Group of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Additionally, he was an Ash Centre Senior Fellow at Harvard University (2015 - 2016) and a National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Professor of International Economic Relations at Nanyang Technological University (2016). As an economist, Dr. Basri is an expert on the fields of macroeconomics, international trade, and political economy. His economic focus is in line with Funding Societies' company motto "Stronger SMEs, Stronger Societies", where Dr. Basri's insights on macroeconomics and its many variables will better equip the company to prepare for financial changes and empower small businesses to propel the economy.

Funding Societies connects local, creditworthy SMEs with investors (both individual and institutional) through a digital marketplace, thus increasing access to financing for the SME sector. SMEs can apply for up to SGD 1.5 million in unsecured business loans and SGD 3 million in secured business loans from Funding Societies' loan products and cash flow solutions. Since its establishment, Funding Societies has crowdfunded more than SGD 220 million across more than 8,500 SME loans.

SMEs in the Southeast Asian region utilize working capital loans from Funding Societies for business growth and expansion. On a macro scale, empowering promising SMEs, a segment that often encounters challenges in accessing credit, strengthens local economies as they will contribute more towards Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Yet despite the segment's potential, an SME Development Survey by DP Information Group shows that 35% of Singaporean SMEs surveyed in 2017 face finance-related issues, up from just 14% in 2015.

*Dr. Muhamad Chatib Basri* said, "The P2P lending industry opens working capital access to SMEs previously underserved by existing financial institutions. Alternative finance platforms like Funding Societies have great potential to drive economic growth and development in Southeast Asia. In the future, I believe synergy between the P2P lending sector and existing financial institutions will create a powerful digital finance ecosystem. By collaborating with Funding Societies, I want to help create positive contributions in the field of financial technology to support economic inclusion and grow a prosperous society in Southeast Asia."

*Kelvin Teo, Co-founder and CEO of Funding Societies, *said, "Dr. Basri has been extremely supportive of our vision since day one. We're honoured to have him officially on board as our advisor, together with other veterans in finance and risk management. His vote of confidence affirms our goal of creating a Southeast Asian society that embraces financial inclusion."

Since its establishment, Funding Societies received the largest Series A and Series B funding for a Southeast Asian P2P lending platform, respectively amounting to USD 10 million and USD 25 million. Its Series B funding round was announced in April 2018 and was supported by SoftBank Ventures Korea, Sequoia India, Alpha JWC Ventures Indonesia, and Golden Gate Ventures. Funding Societies also operates in Malaysia and Indonesia (under the local name Modalku) and holds a Capital Markets Services License issued by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS).
