With so few women in combat arms right now, the services and Defense Department officials really can’t judge how successful the effort has been, Defense Secretary James N. Mattis told cadets at the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia.

“It’s a very, very tough issue because it goes from some people’s perspective of what kind of society do we want,” the secretary said. “In the event of trouble, you’re sleeping at night in your family home and you are the dad, mom, whatever. And you hear glass break downstairs. Who grabs a baseball bat and gets between the kids’ door and whoever broke in, and who reaches for the phone to call 911? In other words, it goes to the most almost primitive needs of a society to look out for its most vulnerable.”

At heart, this is the issue DoD faces, Mattis told the cadet who asked him what results he had seen. The question for the department comes down to whether it is a strength or a weakness to have women in the close-quarter infantry fight, Mattis said.

Then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta opened the door by removing the ban on women in combat jobs in 2013. In 2015, then-Defense Secretary Ash Carter directed the services to open all military occupational specialties to women. Currently, 356 women are combat arms soldiers, and 17 women have graduated from the Army’s Ranger School. The Marine Corps has 113 enlisted women and 29 officers in previously restricted specialties. Specifically in infantry, the Marine Corps has 26 enlisted Marines and one officer who are women.

The secretary said he cannot make a determination about the situation because “so few women have signed up along these lines.”

“We don’t even have data at this time that I can answer your question,” he added.

    *Unit Culture*

Part of what drives the question is the culture of close-combat units, the retired Marine Corps general said. “I was never under any illusions at what level of respect my Marines would have for me if I couldn’t run with the fastest of them and look like it didn’t bother me [or] if I couldn’t do as many pullups as the strongest of them,” Mattis said. “It was the unfairness of the infantry. How did the infantry get its name? Infant soldier. Young soldier. Very young soldier. They’re cocky, they’re rambunctious, they’re necessarily macho, and it’s the most primitive – I would say even evil — environment. You can’t even explain it.”

The close-combat fight is war at its most basic, and Mattis cited an Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. quote when talking to his fellow Civil War veterans: “We have shared the incommunicable experience of war.”

The nation needs to discuss this issue, the secretary said. “The military has got to have officers who look at this with a great deal of objectivity and at the same time remember our natural inclination to have this open to all,” he said. “But we cannot do something that militarily doesn’t make sense.”

The Army chief of staff and Marine Corps commandant are looking at the issue. “This is a policy that I inherited, and so far the cadre is so small we have no data on it,” he said. “We’re hoping to get data soon. There are a few stalwart young ladies who are charging into this, but they are too few. Clearly the jury is out on it, but what we’re trying to do is give it every opportunity to succeed if it can.” Reported by Eurasia Review 14 hours ago.

The Congress Friday alleged a "mahagathbandhan" between Pakistan's ISI and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, accusing the prime minister of betraying the country's national interests and its security.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala demanded that both the prime minister and the BJP president apologise to the nation for "inviting" the ISI to Pathankot air base and for reposing faith in it. The Congress leader also said Modi and his party should not draw political gains out of the valour and courage of armed forces who carried out surgical strikes on terror camps in Pakistan.
"Modi-Shah duo have a 'mahagathbandhan' (grand alliance) with Pakistan's ISI," he told reporters, claiming the biggest proof of their links with the ISI was the statement by its former chief Assad Durrani that 'Modi is ISI's favourite choice as the prime minister of India'.

He said it was due to this "grand alliance" that the Modi government invited the ISI to probe Pathankot terror attack even though it was the Pakistani intelligence agency was responsible for it. Surjewala alleged the Pakistani delegation invited to probe the Pathankot terrorist attack, included members of the ISI. "The prime minister should tell the nation on what basis was the ISI, responsible for Pathankot terror attack, was allowed to carry out a probe," he said.

The Congress leader asked why "Shah gave character certificates of appreciation" to ISI on March 30, 2016 in Kolkata by publicly claiming that "Pakistan has made serious efforts in the Pathankot terror probe". "Shah should tell the nation why he praised Pakistan's ISI if he did not have links with it," he asked. Surjewala was joined by a host of ex-servicemen, including Indian Ex Servicemen Movement (IESM) chairman Maj Gen Satbir Singh, in saying the valour of soldiers should not be used for political gains and vote garnering.

They were objecting to the alleged release of a video by the government of surgical strikes carried out by Indian Army on terror camps in Pakistan. Surjewala said his party saluted the indomitable courage and bravery of the Armed forces and the nation had always celebrated the valour, fortitude and the spirit of sacrifice of jawans. He said the wars of 1947, 1962, 1965, 1971 and 1999 were a testimony of the heroism of the Armed forces.
"Conducting strategic surgical strikes with utmost precision and effective penetration at different times in last two decades has been characteristic of the grit and determination of our forces," he said, providing a list of such strikes since 2000.

"The prime minister and the BJP have always used the blood and sacrifice of our jawans as a tool to garner votes. In fact, the BJP chief dishonoured the valour of our armed forces on October 7, 2016 by disregarding the supreme sacrifices made in the five wars and numerous surgical strikes," he claimed. He alleged the Modi government had compromised the national security and betrayed the national interests in four and a half years.
"The lack of political action and policy has led to a disquiet border and an alarming internal security situation," he claimed.

The Congress leader also asked a set of 10 questions to the prime minister and alleged he had played failed to defend India's borders and had imperiled its safety and security which was apparent in the 500 per cent increase in ceasefire violations by Pakistan since May 2014. "Where was the '56-inches chest' missing when Pakistan committed more than 3,000 ceasefire violations at the LoC and international border," Surejwala asked. "Hasn't Modi failed to consolidate the valiant surgical strikes of our Army on September 28, 2016, as Pakistan dared to commit 1,604 ceasefire violations thereafter in which 29 jawans have been martyred," he asked.

He asked why Modi "bent over backwards before China" by shelving the raising of a special regiment called 'Mountain Strike Corps' along the China border, approved by the Congress-UPA government.
"Has it not imperiled the security of our eastern border," he asked. Surjewala also asked why the prime minister played havoc with India's internal security by "permitting the ugly menace of Naxalism to raise its head, kill our soldiers and civilians and creates internal disturbances".

"Is it not true that since the year 2015, 237 jawans and 380 civilians have been killed in over 3,200 Naxal attacks under the Modi government's watch," he asked. He asked if it was a fact that Modi has completely failed to draft a policy to tackle Naxalism and why he had "betrayed" the soldiers by denying them 'One Rank, One Pension'. "Why has Modi disregarded the honour of our soldiers, veterans and ex-servicemen by making 'One Rank, One Pension' as 'One Rank Five Pensions'," he asked.

The Congress leader asked if it was true that in the 52 months of the Modi government in Jammu and Kashmir alone, 414 jawans were martyred and 259 civilians killed in Pakistan- sponsored terrorism. Surjewala alleged that soldiers like Mandeep and Narender Singh were beheaded and their bodies mutilated by Pakistan even as the Modi government remained a "mute spectator".

10 stars leading Google's efforts to build a media and entertainment empire (GOOG, GOOGL)

With its army of computer engineers, Google is an icon of the Silicon Valley tech world.

But it's also one of the most powerful players in the entertainment and media industry, thanks to an impressive catalog of products and services that spans digital music, videos, gaming and sports.

YouTube, the Google-owned video-sharing hub, is the No. 2 most visited site on the web and one of the world's top sources of music.

But YouTube is just one part of Google's sprawling entertainment empire:

    · Google Play, which serves as the digital store for Android and its more than 2 billion active users across the globe, moves tons of music, movies, TV shows and games.
    · YouTube TV, the internet-based multi-channel TV service, is not yet two years old but is already enticing customers away from the much-maligned traditional cable players.
    · And then there's the world of emerging media like virtual reality and smart speakers.

To make its mark in the industry, Google has enlisted an impressive stable of entertainment industry veterans and tech-savvy innovators, dispatching them to outposts in Los Angeles, New York and other key entertainment hotspots.

The team helping Google expand its entertainment empire includes dealmakers, creatives and techies. Here are some of the key must-know players on the team:

*SEE ALSO: Music honcho Lyor Cohen played hardball with YouTube for years, then shocked everyone by joining the enemy. Here's how he stayed on top and why he says it's time haters 'liberate' themselves.*

*SEE ALSO: Apple should look at YouTube TV and be embarrassed that it didn't come up with the idea first, analysts say*

-Lyor Cohen, YouTube's Global Head of Music-

He's a rap aficionado, turned label chief, turned digital-music exec.

During a 30-year career as a record producer and music exec, Lyor Cohen worked with or helped develop such acts as Jay-Z, The Killers, Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, and Kanye West.

    Then he switched sides.

YouTube scored a major coup when it hired Cohen in 2016. Among his old label pals, the move was unpopular. For a variety of reasons, many once saw Google as a threat. The main knock is that YouTube doesn't pay enough for the music videos that helped turn the site into an entertainment juggernaut.

But Cohen, the former CEO of Recorded Music at Warner Music Group, has done much to patch up the relationship. Cary Sherman, CEO of the Recording Industry Association of America, the labels top lobbyist, complimented the job Cohen's done.

"I think Lyor Cohen is doing a very good job of persuading the people at YouTube that they need to be partners with the music industry," Sherman told Business Insider in a recent interview.

Meanwhile, YouTube remains one of world's the largest music distributors. And to counter a challenge from Apple Music and Spotify, Cohen recently helped launch YouTube's new subscription music service.

-Susanne Daniels, Global Head of Original Content at YouTube-

Susanne Daniels is one of the people responsible for bringing the series "Cobra Kai," to YouTube Premium.

If you're from a certain generation, the show's title is instantly recognizable and may remind you that you once tried fighting your brother while standing on one leg.

The series, which has met with glowing reviews, is based on "The Karate Kid" films, and reprises the lives of two main characters, played by Ralph Macchio and William Zabka.

YouTube Premium, formerly known as as YouTube Red, offers ad-free streaming of all of YouTube's user-generated video. In addition, Premium also offers high-production quality film and TV fare from A-list directors. And that's where Daniels comes in.

She oversees development, programming and production of all of Premium's films and shows. Before Google, Daniels worked on such shows as such shows as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek, and Gilmore Girls at places like MTV, Fox, LifeTime TV and The WB.

-Jonathan Zepp, leads media & entertainment for Android & Google Play-

Google Play is the online store with the inside track to all those billions of Android users. This, and the fact that sometimes the menu at Netflix is lackluster, has helped make Play a top web retailer.

Jonathan Zepp manages partnerships and business strategy for Entertainment, Sports and News video content. He and his team also drive business and content operations for the Google Play Movies & TV first-party service.

According to a story in Variety, Zepp has helped raise Google’s sales of downloadable film and TV shows, or what is known in the business as transactional electronic sell-through.

Prior to joining Google, Zepp worked at Sony Network Entertainment, Paramount Pictures and Napster. Zepp started out as a corporate and intellectual property lawyer.

Under expert supervision, the finalists will experience what it takes to emerge as an accomplished designer on the world stage. The strength of our startup ecosystem is finally paying off as a new report from Startup Genome, a research organization focused on entrepreneurship, just valued Tampa Bay's startup community at $2.3 billion.

Earlier this year, two marketing consultants added their names to the list of rapidly growing startups in the Tampa Bay area. Tamara O'Dea and Michelle Frome, known for their contribution in the successful launch of another well-known startup, Priatek, partnered together to create a full-service marketing and advertising agency with a twist. While the agency works with small to mid-sized businesses, they have dedicated a division focused on working with entrepreneurs and startups.

Co-founder and CEO, Tamara O'Dea, believes in the importance of working with other startups. She said, "The startup community needs the support of a full-service agency just as much as larger, more established businesses do. Unfortunately, they don't think they can afford a marketing agency. What ends up happening is that they try to market their products themselves and get overwhelmed because they have their hands in every part of their businesses. Marketing eventually ends up getting dropped as a priority as their businesses grow because their time is needed within operations. This can be detrimental to their growth because it doesn't matter how amazing their products are if their customers don't know they exist. That's why we created the startup division which focuses on fast, creative and outside-the-box solutions with customized pricing. This gives these businesses the power of a marketing agency without having to spend all their funding."

O'Dea and Frome's list of growing clients is a testament to a business model that is working. Within their first two weeks, they had their first client and have been adding new customers each week. Their staff has grown to nine employees over the last several months. They continue to create new positions as demand for their services continues to increase. Shark Branding Solutions' other Co-founder and President, Michelle Frome, said of their success, "Unfortunately, businesses think they can't afford to work with agencies. That's just not true. We are teaching these businesses that they don't need a big budget to look like a big company." Frome said, "We aren't your typical agency. We specialize in working with startups and small businesses to help them build a big brand presence within their markets in a short amount of time. We utilize our network of creative resources to offer a full suite of marketing and advertising services at a fraction of the costs other agencies and consultants charge."

The founders of Shark Branding Solutions have deep ties within the startup community. They have worked with over fifteen startups over the last twenty years in marketing consulting roles. O'Dea's career has focused on working with both online and brick-and-mortar retailers. She helped them create solid and effective marketing channels that established long-lasting revenue streams. Frome has focused her career on working with startups and small to mid-sized businesses to penetrate new markets that ensure sustainable revenue growth. Through Shark Branding Solutions, the co-founders and their teams are able to scale this expertise through their unique agency model. O'Dea said, "We are excited about this new venture. Michelle and I work great together and really feed off each other's energy and ideas. We've also been able to hand-pick some of the best talent we know to be included on this team. The combination of that kind of unique and creative talent all under one roof is an incredible opportunity, especially for our startup clients. They no longer have to carry the responsibility of launching their new ventures alone. They now have the power of a strong marketing team to support them. This gives them the ability to scale faster and to shorten the amount of time it takes for them to generate revenue."
