Boston, Oct. 03, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- With research showing that Veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) face significant barriers to employment, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and several state, city and nonprofit organizations recently created a first-of-its-kind “Pay for-Success” project to improve employment outcomes for such Veterans.
The Veterans Coordinated Approach to Recovery and Employment (Veterans CARE) project was launched Oct. 3 by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, the City of Boston, New York City partners and the nonprofit organization Social Finance, which stemmed from VA’s grant award to the organization, and will serve 480 Veterans over three years in New York City; Boston and Brockton, Massachusetts; and Central and Western Massachusetts.
“This project demonstrates that supporting Veterans depends on networks of collaborative partnerships, as well as great research and innovative ideas,” said VA Secretary Robert Wilkie. “Research and innovation are fundamental to improving the health care and benefits for our nation’s Veterans.”
According to research, PTSD interferes with a person’s ability to thrive in the workforce, and has been found to impact sustained employment and income negatively. In addition, a negative cycle exists between unemployment and PTSD -- persistent unemployment often is linked to negative health conditions, including depression, which can exacerbate PTSD symptoms.
Further, VA research noted that up to 20 percent of Veterans from recent tours of duty have PTSD, and a 2015 analysis found that Veterans’ labor force participation had declined over the previous 35 years, in close correlation with a growth in service-connected disability.
The Veterans CARE project will involve local VA medical centers to deliver Individual Placement and Support (IPS), an evidence-based approach to supported employment, to program participants. The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center (TVAMC) will oversee and monitor the project.
“The Veterans CARE project will take our work from the research arena into real-world settings where we plan to achieve the highest level of impact of IPS at full scale,” said Veterans CARE Study Chair Dr. Lori Davis. “Sustained meaningful work is a key part of the recovery plan for Veterans living with PTSD.”
Pay for Success is a public finance model that harnesses the power of the capital markets to address critical social and environmental challenges and improve the lives of those in need. In this Pay for Success project, BNP Paribas, Northern Trust, The Dakota Foundation, Deutsche Bank and Robin Hood Foundation provided $5.1 million in impact capital to fund the project.
"We are excited to launch the first Pay for Success project globally to support Veterans, who have served our nation so honorably,” said Tracy Palandjian, CEO and co-founder of Social Finance. “The Veterans CARE project is about bringing the public, private and social sectors together to help Veterans with PTSD secure meaningful employment and lead healthier, happier lives.”
VA’s Center for Innovation and the Corporation for National and Community Service’s Social Innovation Fund are providing $3 million, which is matched by local government partners, to repay project investors if the project achieves measurable results for Veterans.
“Massachusetts is committed to improving employment opportunities for our veterans, and we look forward to working with our partners on the Veterans CARE project to advance this shared objective,” said Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker. “This project will help secure meaningful job opportunities and a more stable future for veterans with PTSD and help us repay the debt the country and Commonwealth owe veterans.”
"The City of Boston is committed to doing everything it can to support our veteran community," said Mayor Walsh. "The City is proud to participate in the Vets CARE program. The program, in conjunction with an array of other services provided through the City, will give our veterans an opportunity not just to survive but thrive to be their very best."
“The IPS treatment helps you get the work you want and also the type of work you can handle. That’s so important for guys like me,” said Bob Simonovich, a Veteran who received Individual Placement and Support services. “Ryan, my IPS specialist, is like my agent. He works for you and with you. He cares for you. You have someone on your side. This is one of the best things I’ve ever done. It has been a game changer for sure.”
“BNP Paribas is proud to provide support to Veterans through a cutting-edge financing solution with social impact,” says Cambyse Parsi, CSR Officer at BNP Paribas. “Our commitment has been strengthened by the support of our Military Employee Resource Group, whose goal is to promote soldier and veteran initiatives in our local communities.”
“As an active investor in projects that directly benefit our communities, Northern Trust is pleased that our fifth Pay-for-Success impact investment provides employment assistance to veterans using a finance tool that aligns repayment with their success,” said Connie Lindsey, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility and Global Diversity & Inclusion at Northern Trust.“The Dakota Foundation is a proud partner in the Veterans CARE project, which effectively demonstrates how to improve mental health support and employment opportunties for our Veterans through evidence-based services,” said Bart Holaday, Founder and Chairman of the Dakota Foundation.
“Deutsche Bank is proud to partner with the Veterans Administration and other concerned entities to address this critical issue,” said John Eydenberg, Chairman, Deutsche Bank Americas. “As a founding member of Veterans On Wall Street, Deutsche Bank is committed to equipping our veterans to succeed in the workforce after their years of service.”

The one-of-a-kind, family-friendly esports event brought students, parents, academia and industry together for lively gaming competitions, education sessions, meet and greets with esports pros, interactive experiences and more.
DALLAS (PRWEB) October 04, 2018
Over the weekend of Sept. 22-23, 2018, more than 2,500 esports fans, parents, academics and industry leaders attended the first annual OP Live Dallas gaming and esports event at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas. The event, Powered by Team Envy and the Dallas Fuel, drew people from across the state of Texas and as far away as Seattle, Wash. and Boston, Mass.
OP Live Dallas, produced through the collaboration of eGency Global and SMU (Southern Methodist University) Guildhall, offered a little bit of something for just about anyone interested in video games and esports – from the passionate gamer to their parents to school administrators to brands interested in navigating the exploding gaming and esports space.
A variety of competitions were held during the event, and esports pros, collegiate teams and amateurs were invited to take part. Teams from sixteen colleges participated in the collegiate Overwatch tournament Powered by Team Envy and the Dallas Fuel, with the University of North Texas esports team coming out on top.
The event also pitted professional live streamers against amateur players in the Bounty Royale Brawl featuring Epic Games’ Fortnite, with the Dream Stream Team’s Top Gun and PinkMeatBall prevailing in the final round.
The GameChangers Hackathon for college students was also held both days. Students competed to build an application to aid the esports industry, with first place honors going to team eRecruit’s Discord bot.
Family fun included pro player and popular streamer meet and greets and photo opps, the ability to mingle with several popular cosplayers at the event and parental education. Through the OP Live app, attendees could also earn chances to win prizes by unlocking badges in the OP Live Odyssey Quest game. There were 39 opportunities to scan QR codes by conquering assigned “quests” throughout the event space. A threshold of 15 badges earned players a shot at the prize wheel. Five players earned all 39 badges, which wasn’t easy, since the player needed to beat a pro player in the Fortnite competition to earn the final badge.
For Chris Stone, CEO of eGency Global, it was essential to create a collaborative atmosphere at OP Live Dallas, where attendees would feel comfortable sharing their passion for gaming and parents, academics and brands could learn more about the many opportunities the esports industry provides.
As he explains, “With OP Live Dallas, we wanted to provide a top notch experience in the realm of esports, with exciting pro and collegiate competitions, which we did – as well as providing the ability for our attendees to battle out with pros on Fortnite. But OP Live is about so much more than competition. There are many misconceptions about gaming and esports, so educating people about the benefits of the industry for students, academia and brands through the ‘Powered Talks’ series was an essential component of this event.”
Malcolm Gilvar, Partner at eGency Global, was pleased that the OP Live Dallas team was able to deliver an experience that was fun for the entire family, while bringing the many facets of esports together, at one event, for the first time.
“We really took a holistic approach to gaming with this event. The fact that the whole family could participate is something no other esports event offers. We were able to educate parents and get them excited about the educational and career opportunities available to their kids who are passionate about gaming. Plus, by attending OP Live, parents, academics and brands were able to see how diverse, inclusive and empowering this community is, which is pretty amazing,” Gilvar says.
Education was a cornerstone of the event’s planning and coordination behind the scenes as well. SMU Guildhall students assisted in planning the event over many months, giving them insight into the esports industry that they will be able to utilize in their future careers, and allowing for student research opportunities to take place, such as assisting with the creation of the Odyssey portion of the OP Live Dallas app.
“OP Live had tremendous outcomes for SMU Guildhall alumni and current students,” said Mark Nausha, Deputy Director of GameLab at SMU Guildhall. “Students presented and demoed more than 30 Guildhall game titles over the course of the weekend, helped organize the event and volunteer teams, and gained invaluable hands-on experience working directly with professional esports teams and collaborating with event coordinators at eGency Global.”
OP Live Dallas was also delighted that money raised during the event will benefit Extra Life™, a division of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals®, which supports local children’s hospitals including Children’s Health®. During the event, not only were funds raised, but 40 new gamers signed up to do their own fundraisers for ExtraLife in the near future.
“Through ExtraLife, the gaming community continues to raise funds that help kids in their local communities. We were honored to support ExtraLife for this event and look forward to continuing to raise funds for this amazing charity in the future,” Stone says.
OP Live will be returning in 2019 and expanding to new communities in the near future. To learn more about this premier esports event, visit http://www.OPLiveDallas.com/.

Corvallis Realtor Kathleen Hutchinson, of Windermere Willamette Valley, recruiting volunteers for the annual Pastega Christmas Light Display.
CORVALLIS, Ore. (PRWEB) October 04, 2018
Windermere Willamette Valley Broker Kathleen Hutchinson is calling on the community to volunteer for the annual Pastega Christmas Light Display, put on by the Pastega Family Foundation at the Benton County Fairgrounds. This free drive-through tradition has brought the community together for nearly four decades.
“Volunteers start putting this Christmas masterpiece together in the last week of October and it takes thousands of hours of volunteer time to make the magic happen, so getting volunteers is crucial,” said Hutchinson, volunteer coordinator for the Pastega Christmas Light Display.
The Pastega family started the light show in 1981 at the Pepsi bottling plant they owned in Corvallis. This light show continued at that location for more than 30 years, growing each year as more holiday scenes like Charlie Brown and the Peanuts characters, Disney figures, The Grinch Whoville, Super Heros and many more.
“Alma Pastega was an artist. She would create figures and paint them to display,” added Hutchinson. “This light display grew bigger over the years when it incorporated more Santas, angels, elves and last year added characters from the children’s movie Frozen.”
It now includes more than 250 figures and mechanized scenes. Each year this wonderful celebration starts the day after Thanksgiving and ends on New Year’s Day.
Visitors can come out to see the Pastega Christmas Light Display from 5 to 10 p.m. daily through January 1 at the Benton County Fairgrounds, 110 SW 53rd Street. Drivers can enter the light show through the Reservoir Avenue entrance, drive slowly and dim their headlights.
Business and residents who want to volunteer can contact Hutchinson directly at (541) 760-2529 or at KathleenHutchinson@Windermere.com.
In addition to the Pastega Christmas Light Display, Hutchinson is involved in numerous organizations, including the Rotary Club of Greater Corvallis; The Benton County Veterans Memorial,Stove Team International, with which she went to Guatemala to do volunteer work this year and will go again in March 2019; and Furniture Share, which takes donated furniture and gives it to low-income people/families in need. She was also a sponsor and participant in a recent golf tournament for the local Boys and Girls Club.

CCAC selected the EV ARC™ product because it is a rapidly-deployed electric vehicle charging infrastructure solution that is tested, proven and emissions-free. The purchase of the EV ARC™ will be made with funds from the Allegheny County Health Department’s Clean Air Fund. The purpose of the Clean Air Fund is to receive and disperse penalties and fines to support activities to improve air quality in Allegheny County. As a result of a federal consent decree, FirstEnergy Corp provided funding to the Health Department for environmentally beneficial projects at CCAC. The environemtally beneficial projects are solar panel installations at two campuses and an electric car charging station. The system does not require any distruptive construction or cause any harmful pollution, and it enables drivers to fuel their EVs with clean, renewable energy.
“The City of Pittsburgh is already using our products to take ambitious steps towards the electricfication of transportation and we view community colleges in Pennsylvania and other states as a great market just as universities already are,” said Envision Solar CEO, Desmond Wheatley. “We applaud the efforts of the Allegheny County Health Department for enabling the driving on sunshine experience as part of their emission reduction plans.”
According to the U.S. Department of Education - Digest of Education Statistics, there are *1,462 community colleges* in the U.S. (2001 numbers). Cleantechinca recently reported that schools, like many other workplaces where people spend several hours at a time, are becoming hubs for EV charging. Envision Solar views schools as a significant market opportunity for the Company’s products.
Invented and manufactured in California, the patented EV ARC™ and EV ARC™ HP products fit inside single parking spaces without reducing available parking. EV ARC™ generates enough clean solar electricity to power up to 225 miles of EV driving in a day. EV ARC™ HP DC fast charging systems provide up to 1100 miles per day. The EV ARC™ system’s solar electrical generation is enhanced by EnvisionTrak™ (patented) which causes the solar array to follow the sun, generating up to 25% more electricity than a fixed array. The energy is stored in the EV ARC™ product’s on-board energy storage for charging day or night, and to provide EV charging and emergency power during grid failure. The EV ARC™ product is a permanent solution that provides Level I, Level II and DC Fast Charging but because it requires no trenching, foundations or installation work of any kind, it is deployed in minutes and can be moved to a new location with ease. EV ARC™ products are manufactured in the company’s San Diego facility by combat veterans, individuals with disabilities, and other minority demographics and highly talented, mission-driven team members.

New Fantasy Format Where Sports Fans Submit Their Picks And ‘Get In The Game’ In Less Than a Minute
ATLANTA (PRWEB) October 04, 2018
The company behind the Fantasy Sports Trade Association’s (FSTA) ‘2016 Rookie of the Year’ Award have today introduced PrizePicks, its flagship daily fantasy sports game created specifically for sports fans to leverage their prediction skills and reap significant rewards. The game is easy to understand, enjoyable to play, and the quickest format the fantasy sports industry has seen to date. After nearly one year in private beta testing, PrizePicks is available now for free on the web at http://www.myprizepicks.com.
The creators of SidePrize developed the PrizePicks game format, offering members new and exciting ways to compete and win prizes. With PrizePicks, fantasy sports fans no longer have to play in competitions against peers with superior knowledge and resources. Instead, they can test their prediction skills in a fixed odds format. Since fans do not compete with each other, they have a higher likelihood of winning significant prizes. Specifically, PrizePicks appeals to season-long fantasy NFL players who are currently sporting 1-3 or 0-4 records and not likely to make their fantasy league playoffs. With this daily fantasy game, these fans have every reason to stay engaged throughout the season, even if they may not contend in their own fantasy leagues.
“The domestic fantasy sports market is made up of more than 53.5 million fantasy players, and the great majority are playing the season-long fantasy format,” said CEO Adam Wexler, who sits on the FSTA Board of Directors and Co-Chairs the Research Committee. “Yet, season-long fantasy players have never found a casual game that allows them to raise the stakes on a daily basis. PrizePicks caters to these sports fans, especially the season-long fantasy players who are seeking a daily fantasy gaming experience.”
PrizePicks curates a board of players to select from on a daily basis. Sports fans pick two, three or four players from the list, and then predict if each player will go over or under their projected fantasy score. Fans then enter the dollar amount they would like to place into an entry, where a minimum entry is $10 and maximum is $100. If they get all their picks right, they win multiples of the dollar amount they entered — with the potential to win up to $1000 per entry. Entry prizes are credited in real-time, and members can withdraw winnings from their accounts via direct deposit or check, with additional forms of payment coming soon.
PrizePicks is available for Football (NFL & NCAAF), Basketball (NBA & WNBA), Baseball (MLB), Soccer (MLS) and Golf (PGA). Sports fans can ‘get in the game’ at http://www.myprizepicks.com, where every new fan receives a free first entry to win a quick $25. The game also offers an immediate $100 match on each member’s first deposit.
PrizePicks is the most simple, fast and fun game to hit the daily fantasy sports market. Created by industry veterans, PrizePicks is for the casual sports fans who wants something extra riding on the results of their sports viewing experience. In less than a minute, members can submit their daily picks and walk away with significant prizes. For more information, visit http://www.myprizepicks.com and connect with us on Twitter.
