Handcrafted, hard-to-find items, and vendors wanting to increase product exposure find a home on Albertsons Companies’ new site

Boise, Oct. 16, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- BOISE, ID., October 16, 2018 –  Albertsons Companies today announced that *Albertsons Digital Marketplace*  now offers over 40,000 specialty products to customers nationwide, like hard-to-find spices and condiments, specific flavors of coffee, unique health and beauty products, and other health and wellness items. The newly launched site plans to offer more than 100,000 products by the end of the calendar year.

“*Albertsons Digital Marketplace* helps customers discover exciting new products from innovative manufacturers that are then shipped directly to them, creating an infinite aisle,” said Narayan Iyengar, SVP Digital and eCommerce at Albertsons Cos. “This marketplace is just another example of how we are using digital technologies to reinforce and extend our core capabilities of offering exciting new products and a wide assortment. Our infinite aisle also helps a large number of specialty sellers like small businesses and budding entrepreneurs get exposure to our vast customer base.”

Two of the key innovators behind the Marketplace are Karl Varsanyi, GVP of Digital Product Management, and Jon Fahrner, Head of Marketplace. Prior to joining Albertsons Companies, Varsanyi helped turn into the one of the largest ecommerce sites in the United States and an omnichannel retailing leader. Fahrner, who was part of’s founding team, saw the similarities between his past work and the vast product opportunities in food retail.

Fahrner said, “Our digital team is focused on removing the limits on how people shop for food. Today, people are trying to squeeze the best out of each day in their busy lives. While some customers want an extended selection or unique specialty products, there are other customers who simply prefer to have bulky items like pet food shipped straight to their front doors. This is just the beginning. We are excited to continue to innovate new models to better fit people’s lives.”

Eclectic and exciting merchandise differentiates the Marketplace. One artisan seller that is gaining exposure is Spicemode, which crafts simmer sauces and spice blends. The hand-made, all-natural products are inspired by homemade meals prepared by the founder’s mother as well as his years operating a food truck, the Curry Cruiser, in the City of Chicago. Spicemode has been available online and in select retail stores, yet the company was looking for even more exposure. The Marketplace now gives the product national scale.

“We started this company on the premise that global flavors should be available to everyone,” said Amar Singh, Chief Flavor Officer of Spicemode. “Albertsons Digital Marketplace lets even more customers begin their flavor journey with small-batch cooking sauces and spices.”

The Marketplace is powered by Mirakl and can be accessed at

Ex-Apple engineers created an app to track basketball shots using AI, and it's already getting attention from Mark Cuban and the NBA (AAPL)· Apple recently highlighted an app that uses an iPhone and machine learning to understand whether a basketball shot went in the hoop or not.
    · The company, Nex Team, was founded by former Apple employees and is based in San Jose, California.
    · The app, HomeCourt, is backed by a range of basketball insiders, including Mark Cuban, Sam Hinkie, Jeremy Lin, and Steve Nash.
    · The app can determine metrics like how high you jump or what the arc of the ball is using artificial intelligence and the iPhone's camera.

For HomeCourt co-founder David Lee, the idea for his startup came because he couldn't hit a shot.

He was making web apps for Apple when one night he was playing in a recreational basketball game, and his wife and two daughters dropped by to watch him play.

"I couldn’t make a single shot in front of them," Lee told Business Insider. So, he wondered, "can I make my phone understand my game?"

At first, he just wanted to write software that would automatically cut the footage into a highlight reel so that his family could see that he could actually make shots. But less than two years later, he was standing on stage with NBA legend Steve Nash at Apple's iPhone XS launch showing off his app.

It's a rapid rise for HomeCourt, a product out of a young San Jose startup called Nex Team founded by Apple, Facebook, and Google veterans that uses machine learning to understand what's happening on a basketball court.

On Tuesday, the startup launched the feature that it revealed on stage at Apple, called Shot Science — the app can now track a number of different metrics that affect how accurate a shooter is, including how long it takes to release the ball, how high you jump, and the angle the ball is released at, using nothing but an iPhone and its camera.

It can also track how many shots you take during a session, and the percentage of them you make and where they were taken from.

"The problem we want to solve is how to use the phone to track shots, and we incrementally moved more and more to AI, because it gives us more precise results," Lee said.

The company has raised $4 million in seed funding, and counts a lot of basketball players and pros as investors, including Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, former 76ers general manager Sam Hinkie, NBA point guard Jeremy Lin, and Nash.

    *'You’re not making enough shots!'*

The key to what HomeCourt does is a trendy machine learning technology called neural networks.

HomeCourt's advanced learning algorithms analyze lots of footage of basketball courts and sessions to understand where, say, the three-point line is, or if a shot went in or not.

It has a headstart over competitors. It has already recorded over three million shots since launching the beta version of the app in Feburary, according to a person familiar with the startup. That data helps it improve its machine learning models.

But in the early days of the startup, the company had to collect data manually — often by filming themselves taking shots or collecting video from local teams. In fact, finding a nearby basketball court is a priority for the young startup's next office. "My team was complaining, 'you’re not making enough shots!'" Lee said, joking that he was a better rebounder than shooter.

"We're the data," Homecourt cofounder Alex Wu, who leads marketing for the startup, said. "But the more people use our app, we see hoops from around the world, even backyard hoops, and different types of shots," which improve the company's image recognition models.

For example, when HomeCourt tested its app with Stanford, it had to improve its artificial intelligence models, because the college players were too good.

"When we started testing with Stanford — they were too good, they were too accurate, their balls were going in smooth and clean through the net, so our AI wouldn’t recognize that they had shot," Wu said.

The app takes advantage of Apple's latest technology, called CoreML, that enables artificial intelligence models to run more efficiently and using less battery life on an iPhone's specialized processor — one of the reasons why Apple decided to highlight the young company at its biggest launch of the year.

"iPhone XS is the first iPhone that has the performance that we can actually ship" the real-time shot tracking feature, Lee said. "On the last generation, the delay is a couple seconds. The specific improvement in the hardware itself is dramatic."

"And it operates at one-tenth of the battery life too, so it's a performance improvement, not just processing wise, but also usability wise," Wu said.

    *Finding the next Steve Nash*

These real-time metrics may help burgeoning young players review their practice sessions so they can improve more quickly.

"I would spend hours shooting by myself, just hoping I was refining the techniques to take me to the next level," said Nash at the feature's launch.

The way that the NBA is looking at HomeCourt and similar analytics is that they can streamline a system that's typically been paper and pencil based and labor intensive, according to a person with knowledge of how NBA front offices work. If teams can automate that data collection and even look at metrics that weren't tracked before, like launch angle, then pro players can improve the quality of their practice.

So far, elite teams including the Boston Celtics, Philadelphia 76ers, and Duke University have tested the HomeCourt app.

"I wish I had this when I was younger. Just imagine what happens when people have access to this technology when they're 13," Lee said.

But HomeCourt isn't just for players who want to go pro. The app also has a social component, where players can compete in shooting contests with other players around the world, even if they're in a completely different country.

For example, currently, the top challengers on HomeCourt's leaderboards are in Europe, an area that's traditionally not a basketball hotspot.

And going forward, the young startup hopes it can continue to refine its models so it can capture and understand entire basketball games, not just practice.

"We're working on solving 1-on-1 first, then onto 2-on-2, 3-on-3," Wu said.

"We're trying to capture more of your basketball life and be helpful in more places. So you can imagine us going into games," Lee said.

Divvy Charity allows participating bank customers to convert their credit and debit card loyalty rewards into donations.

PORTLAND, Ore. (PRWEB) October 18, 2018

ARM Insight, a leader in payments data solutions, recently passed a significant milestone on the way to earning an American Red Cross Platinum Award in 2018. Through its Divvy Product Suite Charity module, ARM Insight has already helped bank customers donate more than $500,000 to the American Red Cross relief efforts in North Carolina and Florida following Hurricanes Florence and Michael.

The charity module of the Divvy Product Suite allows participating bank customers to convert their credit and debit card loyalty rewards into donations. Thousands of banks have chosen to offer Divvy Charity as a part of their loyalty rewards, and customers of those banks can choose to donate their points to the charity of their choice. Many of these customers have chosen to support the American Red Cross.

“Through the generosity of corporate partners and individual donors, the American Red Cross is prepared before disaster strikes. Corporate donors, like ARM Insight, help secure a reliable funding base for disaster relief services that enables the Red Cross to respond immediately, meeting the needs of individuals and families affected by disaster, regardless of cost,” said David Schaeffer, Chief Development Officer of the Red Cross Cascades Region. “We appreciate innovative companies such as ARM Insight developing new tools that help us find new ways to raise funds.”

Already a recipient of the American Red Cross Gold Award in 2017, ARM Insight also helped raise more than $500,000 to support relief efforts in the aftermath of hurricanes such as Harvey, Maria, and Nate.

“ARM is pleased with the success of the Divvy Charity product and happy that we are converting loyalty points into meaningful donations to these charities,” said Jason Hills, Chief Revenue Officer at ARM Insight. “Our bank customers are not only able to help charities by donating their loyalty points, but bank customers that enroll in Divvy transact 46% more times per month than customers that do not.”

Over 3,000 banks offer Divvy as a part of their debit or credit card loyalty solution. The product can be integrated into a bank’s existing loyalty suite through single sign-on, or it can be easily deployed as an email tool that requires no integration.

Collision repair shop will give $1,250 plus a $1,250 donation to charity for funniest audio, video or written joke. Participants get chance to perform at The Looney Bin Comedy Club in Staten Island.

    STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (PRWEB) October 19, 2018

    Barry's Auto Body, Staten Island's eco-friendly collision repair shop is hosting a competition to make people laugh. The competition is open to the general public. The person who submits the funniest video, audio or written joke will receive $1,250 plus a donation of $1,250 to their choice of one of these local charities:· STATEN ISLAND YMCA DRUG COUNSELING;

There is no cost to participate. Everyone who participates will receive an opportunity to perform at The Looney Bin Comedy Club in Staten Island.

The idea for the competition came after Barry's Auto Body released several humorous educational videos where Staten Island couple, Donna and Vito (played by Jennifer Remauro and George Passariello) found themselves in need of auto collision repair. No matter what type of repair was needed, someone would boldly state, "I Gotta Guy" to fix that. The guy was Barry Crupi, owner of Barry's Auto Body along with his sister, Michelle Crupi. The series was a hit which prompted the Crupi's to launch the, "Make Staten Island Laugh" competition.

Said Barry Crupi, "People are normally anxious when it comes to auto collision repair. Since humor is the great equalizer, we decided to use comedy to help educate the public about the collision repair process. The "Make Staten Island Laugh" competition is our way of injecting humor into a stressful situation."

Anyone wishing to offer a submission can do so by visiting Barry's Auto Body website. The competition ends on December 31, 2018 so submissions should be uploaded as soon as possible. Once the submission is uploaded to the website, the link should be shared with friends, family and on social media in order to garner comments. Although Barry's Auto Body will make the final determination on which submission is funniest, comments from the general public will be strongly considered.

Rules governing the competition can be found on the submission page of the website.
