HOUSTON, Jan. 03, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Universal Weather and Aviation, Inc. Chairman Greg Evans has been awarded the National Business Aviation Association’s prestigious Silk Scarf Award for his contributions to the business aviation community throughout his career. The Silk Scarf represents diligence, industry and persistence and was created to honor outstanding business aviation community members and inspire future aviators.“Over many years, Greg has generously donated his resources, time, finances, and even his aircraft to support those in need,” said NBAA President and CEO Ed Bolen. “He is always willing to step up, and lend a hand to help others. He embodies what the Silk Scarf Award is all about, and it is a privilege to recognize him with this honor.”

Evans has been with Universal since 1978. Prior to serving as Universal Chairman, Evans served as flight supervisor for two years and Vice President, Operations Officer for 18 years. Throughout this aviation career, Evans has served as a vocal and active advocate for business aviation, working with government and airport officials to ease access restrictions and improve operating flexibility at high-risk and stress locations around the world.

Bolen noted that Evans was instrumental in the work of a broad, diverse coalition that successfully defeated recent legislation calling for so-called privatization of air traffic control. He has also been a strong supporter of NBAA’s political action committee and Leadership Council.

He has donated Universal’s business aircraft to assist the Corporate Angel Network, Impact a Hero, Operation Mend and other non-profit organizations. In 2010, Universal received Gulfstream’s prestigious Outstanding Flight Award for donating the use of its aircraft to transport severely wounded veterans to special events in their honor.

In addition to his involvement supporting industry initiatives, Evans is also active in the community, supporting the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, where he graduated with a double major in Business Administration and Behavioral Marketing. He also helps nonprofit organizations such as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Corporate Angel Network, Impact a Hero, and Operation Mend.

Democrats Take Control Of House Without Committee Assignments

Democrats Take Control Of House Without Committee Assignments Watch VideoA new Congress is underway, and dozens of new Democrats are getting the lay of the land.

Freshman members of Congress Harley Rouda and Chrissy Houlahan soaked in their first day as part of the House majority.

"It's getting real, that's for sure. Especially when you come to the front door of the office and you see your name on the nameplate, that brings home that it's time," said Rouda.

"One generation ago, my father and his mother came here on a boat from war-torn Poland after having survived the Holocaust, and now I'm sitting here as a member of Congress," said Houlahan.

They're part of the most diverse Congress in history, not just in terms of gender but in terms of sexual orientation, religion and race. But there's little time for celebration with a government shutdown on their hands. House Democrats say they're focused on furthering a bill to end the shutdown with no money for the border wall.

Even with House passage, it's not expected to go anywhere. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stated before the vote that he wouldn't bring a passed bill to the floor.

But once they get the government open, they can focus on their own legislative priorities. For Houlahan, it's issues like transportation, infrastructure, education and veterans' affairs. For Rouda, it's climate change and infrastructure.

Typically by the time new members are sworn in they have committee assignments. But because of the death of former President George H.W. Bush, new members are being sworn in without assignments.

Both Rouda and Houlahan say no matter what committees they end up on, they'll focus on issues important to their constituents, and they both want to do it in a bipartisan fashion.  Reported by Newsy 20 hours ago.

MassGenie announced today that its gross merchant volume (GMV) in the fourth quarter of 2018 was $3.37 million, which was a 2000% increase compared to the same quarter in 2017. GMV for the full year of 2018 was $4.86 million, which was a 1398% increase compared to 2017.

MassGenie also announced that they have received an investment from SV Frontier, their first institutional investor. The latest funding will be used to fuel MassGenie’s continued growth in new customer acquisition and expansion of MassGenie’s ecosystem. “It has been exciting to see the acceleration in growth that we have been experiencing since we launched in 2018 with the redesigned Power Deal,” said Dan DeVries, COO of MassGenie. “Our 2000% Q4 2018 same quarter growth was a significant increase from our same quarter growth of 424% in Q3 2018."

CA employers must provide sexual harassment training to all employees in 2019

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (PRWEB) January 04, 2019

Traliant, an innovator in online sexual harassment training, today announced the availability of a new training course, the California Edition of Preventing Discrimination and Harassment. The course enables California businesses to move quickly to comply with SB 1343, a new law requiring that employers with five or more employees train their workforce on preventing sexual harassment before January 1, 2020.

The California Edition of Preventing Discrimination and Harassment is available in two versions to meet the requirements of SB 1343: a 60-minute course for employees, and a 120-minute course for managers and supervisors. The California Edition covers all the topics and guidance mandated under the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing regulations, including federal and California anti-harassment laws, sexual harassment, abusive conduct, discrimination, retaliation and harassment based on gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation.

For more information, please visit California Sexual Harassment Training

“The California Edition provides organizations with a comprehensive sexual harassment training solution that meets all of the SB 1343 requirements and more,” said Mike Pallatta, Traliant’s CEO and Co-Founder. “We believe that to be effective, training must offer employees a dynamic, interactive experience that raises awareness of the different types of harassment, and reinforces the importance of creating a respectful, inclusive workplace culture.”

SB 1343 Training Requirements
SB 1343 requires that California employers provide all supervisory employees with at least two hours of sexual harassment training, and nonsupervisory employees with one hour of training, before January 1, 2020. After that, organizations must retrain employees and supervisors every two years. SB 1343 applies to seasonal and temporary employees, too, who must receive one hour of training within 30 calendar days or 100 hours, if they work less than six months. Employers must also provide additional training to employees within six months of their promotion to a supervisory position.

The goal of the partnership is to develop student cybersecurity competencies with hands-on experience, as well as to introduce students to next generation cyber security tools incorporating artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics.

Northfield, Vt., Jan. 04, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Norwich University officials announced a partnership with Respond Software to integrate its Respond Analyst tool, the first fully autonomous virtual analyst with decision automation, to augment students’ experiential learning with this new operational and academic experience. This partnership is designed to keep Norwich students educated in relevant technologies that they can be ready to operate upon graduation in the longstanding Norwich tradition of experiential learning. The goal of the partnership is to develop student cybersecurity competencies with hands-on experience, as well as to introduce students to next generation cyber security tools incorporating artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics.

Norwich University Applied Research Institutes (NUARI) is contracted with the State of Vermont to build a Security Situation Center that is operated by professionals and students.

“We intend to work together to build the first ever Security Situation Center, leveraging the best of human and machine and thus offering higher value hands-on experience to our students who are the future leaders of our national cyber defense,” Vice President for Strategic Partnerships Phil Susmann said.

Operational security has historically been achieved by organizations having people individually evaluate the nature of cyber events. The Respond Analyst tool monitors the alerts generated by security technology, so that Norwich students can focus on high value tasks that leverage their curiosity and creativity to deliver far more effective cyber-security operations.

Offering cutting-edge, hands-on, real-world experience to students as they monitor critical state, local and educational networks will ensure that graduates are ready to take immediate operational roles upon graduation.

“The future of Artificial Intelligence integrates decision automation and human reasoning,’” Respond CEO Mike Armistead said. “Building a Security Situation Center around the Respond Analyst offers both the chance to learn and develop best practices, while conducting real operations on behalf of state and local government.”

Ranked #2 by the Ponemon Institute for cyber security in the U.S., Norwich University programs are consistently ranked among the best in the nation for cyber security education. Norwich University is recognized as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and has received designation as a Center of Digital Forensics Academic Excellence (CDFAE) by the Defense Cyber Crime Center (DC3). The VASH program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide housing vouchers for homeless veterans in areas of the country that have the highest number of homeless veterans.
· While more than 700 veterans call a Jamboree property home, this is the nonprofit developer’s first dedicated property for veterans and, when complete, will be Orange County’s largest housing development exclusively for veterans.

American Legion Newport Harbor Post 291: Brian Fleming, Jr., Honor Guard Commander

WHEN:
Monday, January 7, 2019 10:30am to 1pm (ceremony begins at 11am)

WHERE:
Santa Ana Veterans Village
3312 West 1st Street, Santa Ana, CA 92703 (between Harbor Boulevard and Fairview Avenue)

WHY:
While more than 700 veterans live in Jamboree properties across California, this is Jamboree’s first dedicated property for veterans struggling with homelessness and a range of other challenges. By bringing together partner agencies, Santa Ana Veterans Village will be a hub of enriched programming and activities to support the veterans living here with employment, health and other special services.

According to the 2015 U.S. Census, approximately 123,000 veterans live in Orange County, and in 2017, a survey of Orange County’s homeless population found that 12% of the homeless were veterans. Without employment, finding affordable housing is next to impossible, especially in Orange County, the sixth most expensive urban area in which to live throughout the United States.

Additionally, Permanent Supportive Housing for those who are homeless – and who may struggle with a variety of disabilities and other challenges – includes supportive services to ensure the residents remain housed and avoid a return to homelessness. This strategy is a proven, cost-effective solution to housing those struggling with homelessness. As a result of decreases in service utilization and criminal justice contacts, the estimated average annual cost of services in Orange County is 50% cheaper for the chronically homeless person living in permanent supportive housing with services ($51,587) as compared to that same person living on the street and in emergency shelters ($100,759). And, the annual cost of services for the most chronically homeless person on the street is $439,787. The annual cost to house that same person in permanent supportive housing with services is $55,332 – a cost savings of more than 88%.

Since the release of this study, the County of Orange has adopted a plan and committed to fund construction of 2,700 supportive housing units over the next three to five years, which would end chronic homelessness in Orange County. Jamboree’s Santa Ana Veterans Village is the first 75 units of this countywide plan – an honor according to the nonprofit developer.

Based on this study conducted by UC Irvine and funded by Jamboree and United Way Orange County, Santa Ana Veterans Village has the potential to save Orange County more than $2.5 million in emergency services, unnecessary hospitalizations and other expenses annually by providing 75 homeless veterans with housing and services.

HOW:
In collaboration with the City of Santa Ana, the County of Orange, the Veterans Administration (VA) and other leading veterans service organizations, Jamboree’s design concept for this innovative development is “to be a sanctuary of stability and a hub of hope” for some of Orange County’s most vulnerable veterans. This concept will be brought to life with a U-shaped, three-story, elevatored residential building of 75 one- and two-bedroom apartments that opens onto a spacious courtyard, nearly 10,000 square feet of active open space – including a community garden and reflection walk – and a 4,500-square-foot community center that will be home to a veterans services collaborative.

With the creation of the Santa Ana Veterans Village Collaborative, Jamboree’s innovative approach to community impact brings together – in one place – some of Orange County’s leading veterans service agencies to support residents as well as veterans throughout the community. These include Veterans Affairs Long Beach Healthcare System, Goodwill of Orange County’s Tierney Center for Veterans Services, Veterans Legal Institute, Strength in Support, and Step Up. This collaborative approach to a veterans services center will provide onsite mental health counseling, wellness services, employment services, and legal assistance.

The property will feature a contemporary interpretation of Spanish revival architecture with characteristic stucco walls, colorful tile accents, arches and ornamental ironwork. In line with Jamboree’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, the development is designed to achieve a LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) for Homes-certified Gold rating. This lowers energy consumption, provides a cost-saving benefit to and promotes the health of residents. It will comply with Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements and will adhere to the provisions of the California Building Code for accessibility.

Outdoor amenities in the nearly 10,000-square-feet of active open space also include a lounge and barbecue/dining areas, dog run, and basketball half-court. Indoor amenities include a TV room and lounge area, pet spa, laundry room, fitness center and yoga room, counseling offices, multipurpose rooms and a kitchen.

A testament to the uniqueness of this community, Jamboree has brought together a nexus of nine different funding partners – including private groups like The Home Depot Foundation and the Orange County Community Foundation (OCCF) – to create the financing necessary to construct a long-lasting affordable community for low-income veterans.

Property Fact Sheet:
Available upon request.

Bill Kristol Beefs Up The Bulwark With Ex-Weekly Standard Staffers: ‘Voice for Non-Trumpian Conservatives’ Bill Kristol is beefing up The Bulwark, the once sleepy conservative news aggregator site of his nonprofit, the “Defending Democracy Together Institute.”

Kristol, who will serve as editor-at-large of the operation has hired former Weekly Standard employees who spent the holiday season in the wilderness after their former parent company, Clarity Media Group, abruptly shuttered the organization last month.

“On Monday, TheBulwark.com will transform from an aggregator of news and opinion from a right-wing bent into an website that provides original opinion items, analysis, and reporting,” Jim Swift, a former deputy online editor of the Weekly Standard who is now with The Bulwark, told TheWrap.

Radio host and MSNBC contributor Charlie Sykes has been tapped as the site’s new editor-in-chief and will be joined by former Weekly Standard heavyweights such as Jonathan V. Last, Rachael Larimore, Jim Swift, Ben Parker, Andrew Egger and Hannah Yoest.

The first episode of Sykes’ Podcast and a new piece by Kristol are already live on the site.

“With the recent closing of the Weekly Standard, we think it is more important than ever to provide a voice for non-Trumpian conservatives,” reads a newly updated About page. “As much of the Right descends into sophism and trollery, we will be a forum for rational, principled, fact-based conservative commentary.”

On Dec. 14, The Weekly Standard was shuttered by Clarity Media Group and their large subscriber base was rolled into a newly-expanded Washington Examiner — also a Clarity property. The decision left a lot of bitter feelings among Standard veterans, including co-founder John Podhoretz, who said the magazine’s billionaire owner Philip Anschutz actively prevented a sale of the company, preferring instead to shutter it.

“The cessation of the Standard is an intellectual and political crime,” Podhoretz thundered in a piece for Commentary. “There is no real reason we are witnessing the magazine’s demise other than deep pettiness and a personal desire for bureaucratic revenge on the part of a penny-ante Machiavellian who works for its parent company.”

Technology companies like to promote artificial intelligence’s potential for solving some of the world’s toughest problems, like reducing automobile deaths and helping doctors diagnose diseases. A company started by three former Google employees is pitching AI as the answer to a more common problem: being happier at work. The Mountain View startup, Humu, builds on some of the people-analytics programs pioneered by the internet giant, which has studied things like the traits that define great managers and how to foster better teamwork. Humu wants to bring similar data-driven insights to other companies. Reported by SFGate 22 hours ago.

Western International Securities, Inc. has joined the California Sponsor A Highway® Program. Each sponsored sign promotes highway litter-removal efforts to keep highways clean and safe in California.

PASADENA, Calif. (PRWEB) January 05, 2019

In an industry that lacks a personalized approach, Western International makes it a company goal to tailor their advice to the unique needs of each company they serve. As a business that cares for others, they felt it was an excellent opportunity to join forces with Adopt A Highway Maintenance Corporation®.

Andrew Kuo, Managing Director, stated, “A grounding component at Western is to give back to our people and community. We’ve been fortunate to be in a position where we can help give back to the environment and to communities where we work and live. This includes financial support to programs close to the hearts of our own team members that advocate for and assist veterans, those with special needs, women, children, animals, spiritual and research communities. We’re appreciative to Adopt a Highway® for the opportunity to assist in keeping our community looking clean and prestigious.”

Sponsoring two segments of highway in the California Sponsor A Highway® Program shows Western International Securities, Inc.’s desire to keep the drivers in Pasadena safe from dangerous roadway obstructions. Maintaining clean roads not only improves highway safety, but it also provides significant benefits to the environment by enhancing sustainability efforts as well.
