Manhattan College Ranks No. 17 in U.S. News’ America’s Best Colleges Report

U.S. News & World Report recognizes Manhattan College among top schools and as a standout college for veterans.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. (PRWEB) September 10, 2015

In the latest U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges 2016 ranking released today, Manhattan College was ranked No. 17 among the best regional universities in the North, a spot above its ranking last year. This is the ninth year in a row that Manhattan has placed in the top 20 out of 138 schools ranked in the category.

For the first time, U.S. News recognized Manhattan College as a top college for veteran students. Certified for the GI Bill and a participant school in the Yellow Ribbon Program, Manhattan College provides many resources for veteran students, including the VALOR (Veterans Academic Learning Opportunities Realized) Club, which sponsors several events each semester.

For the second straight year, Manhattan College achieved high marks in graduation rate performance. According to U.S. News: “If the school’s actual graduation rate for the 2008 entering class is higher than the rate U.S. News predicted for that same class, then the college is enhancing achievement or over-performing.” Manhattan College exceeded its predicted graduation rate for the entering class of 2008, graduating seven percent more students than anticipated.

In addition, the College’s School of Engineering was recognized in the Best in Undergraduate Engineering category. This ranking is based on surveys of engineering deans and senior faculty at undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology). The School of Business also ranked in the Best Undergraduate Business category, which only ranks schools accredited by the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business).

The college ranking categories are based upon the 2010 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching classifications. U.S. News has used the Carnegie classification system since the first Best Colleges rankings in 1983, because they are accepted as the basis for classifying schools by most higher education researchers. Manhattan College is categorized as a Regional University because it offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate programs, but does not offer doctoral degrees.

Anchorage, AK (PRWEB) September 10, 2015

The first annual Military Money $mart Financial Fitness Fair will be held at building 600 on Joint Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER) from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, September 15. Many key agencies are working together to provide tools to Alaska’s Service members, Families and Veterans to ensure financial success.

According to the Alaska Regional Manager of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) and Coalition member, Michelle Tabler, “Recent schemes include a new twist on the ‘grandparent scam’ which targets seniors with deployed relatives; phony rental property scams that target relocating Service members; and fake websites that mimic legitimate Military benefits sites but instead attempt to collect personal information to divert payments. The Coalition, including the BBB, believes that financial readiness equals mission readiness.” Military Money $mart is designed to educate Alaska’s Military population on the importance of financial literacy and provide tips to secure their finances during different life stages such as deployment and transition.

The event is open to anyone who has access to JBER and has an interest in financial literacy and resources. Subject matter experts from the Securities and Exchange Commission, Alaska Division of Banking and Securities and Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education are scheduled to present. Additionally, the Alaska Department of Labor and the Internal Revenue Service will be on hand to answer questions from Service members, their Families and Veterans. For those individuals participating in the workshops, door prizes will be given away. The workshop schedule is as follows:

Huge Winter On Tap in Mammoth Lakes

New Restaurants, Lodging Options and Events to Greet Skiers and Snowboarders

Mammoth Lakes, CA (PRWEB) September 10, 2015

Mammoth Lakes continues to evolve as a world-class winter destination with the new Holiday Haus Hostel, electric snow tubing and an updated flight schedule from Denver International Airport highlighting a number of changes that will greet visitors during the 2015-16 winter season.

Benefiting from its uniquely high elevation, Mammoth Mountain's ski/ snowboard season is the longest in California and is slated to start this year on Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov. 11). With 7 months of snow the norm, there’s plenty of time to eat, drink, and experience everything that Mammoth Lakes has to offer, including new:

Breweries· Mammoth Brewing Renovations/ Expansion - Apres favorite Mammoth Brewing Company continues to expand its new village tasting room, opening a new upstairs seating area that will expand capacity and allow for private group events. The space will also host live music.

Lodging· Holiday Haus Hostel - The New Holiday Haus Hostel offers budget-minded travelers a new lodging option in Mammoth Lakes. The comfortable and modern rooms, kitchen and common areas are located right on Main Street, walking distance from the Village Gondola and the restaurants, bars and nightlife that surround it.

Restaurants· 53 Kitchen and Cocktails - Mammoth’s newest eatery in the heart of the Village, is an all day affair. Fuel up for a day in the mountains with a good breakfast, and cap it off it with an artisanal cocktail and a selection from a diverse dinner menu. The stage and expansive dance floor also make 53 the destination for live music and entertainment well into the evening
· Skadi - When Restaurant Skadi chef Ian Algeroen closed the doors two years ago and the space was taken over by a new restaurant, locals thought Skadi was gone for good. "Back by popular demand" is an overused cliche but it certainly applies here. After spending the intervening years hearing from Mammoth Lakes’ locals about how much they miss the eatery, Chef Ian has reopened the doors on Skadi and a concept that's as timeless as the mountains from which it draws inspiration. Now located on Berner St. near the Village, Skadi is back and offering authentic high alpine cuisine endemic to the alps.

Activities· Electric Tubing at Woolly’s Tube Park - You can leave your old-school toboggan at home. Woolly, Mammoth's tusked mascot, has you covered. On five nights throughout the season, Woolly's tube park will transform into an electric circus in the forest. With DJ's, drinks (adult and otherwise) food, glow sticks, laser lighting and of course, snow tubing.
· Tamarack Full Moon Tours - Every full moon this winter (and the evenings immediately before and after) naturalist-led tours of the wilderness surrounding Mammoth Lakes will take on a whole different feel. The snow on the trails and surrounding mountains soaks up the moon's glow, allowing for comfortable visibility and an unforgettable experience. Guests can cross-country ski or snowshoe the two hour tour, which finishes with drinks and smores around the iconic fireplace at the Tamarack Lodge.
· Bleu Wine & Tasting Bar - Located inside Bleu Handcrafted Foods, the Tasting Bar is a customizable tour of cured meats, artisanal cheeses and the beer and wines that best complement them. Served atop Bleu's custom Charcuterie hanger, it's an excellent apres experience, particularly for groups. The culinary tour is curated by Bleu's knowledgeable staff and updated regularly. Reservations are recommended.
· Events - Ezakimak: On April 23, 2016, test your limits with the ultimate winter adventure challenge. Race from the base of Mammoth Mountain to 11,053 ft on cross country skis, snowshoes, by foot or fatbike! The Ezakimak brings participants from 9,000 ft to over 11,000 ft in a winter trial featuring both competitive and novice classes

Access· Flights - Following a limited trial run last winter, Mammoth Lakes will enjoy regular, weekly flight service to and from Denver International Airport on United Airlines. The expanded flight schedule makes getting to and from Mammoth Lakes much easier and faster. Flights are scheduled to begin December 19, running Saturdays through March 19. Continued seasonal service from San Diego, San Francisco and Los Angeles will return this winter as well.

The Power of Conscience: The US Military and the Myth that Humanity is Predisposed to Violence

0

By Guest Author Maria Santelli, Executive Director, Center on Conscience & War

Camilo Mejía, an Iraq War veteran, conscientious objector, and peace activist. Photo courtesy of Center on Conscience & War.
We have this tragic misperception that humanity is predisposed to violence.*The truth is that humanity is predisposed to peace. The default position for humanity is that of conscientious objector to war and violence.*In our work at the Center on Conscience & War, this is proven to us daily, through our individual conscientious objectors.  Science has proven it, too. This tendency for cooperation over competition is evident in daily life: on an average day, most people will witness countless  acts of cooperation, kindness, and humanity towards one another, and not one act of violence or competition. And most of it is so commonplace, we barely even notice it. We take our nonviolence for granted. And so does the news. What makes the news is violence, not cooperation.  Particularly, on our local news programs, the top stories are the ones that depict street crimes and "home invasions." Seeing this interpersonal violence, I am convinced, leads us to believe that people are predisposed to acting violently toward one another. We all make decisions based on patterns we observe, and if the patterns we observe are highlighting violence, we are going to decide that humanity is violent. How does this relate to war? If we believe that violence among humans is natural, we will believe that war is inevitable. But violence is not natural. Our conscience tells us killing another human being is wrong. And it is the military that knows this better than anyone. The military has taken notice that, over time, and through the history of war, the vast majority of individuals refuse to shoot to kill. That means, instead of firing directly at an "enemy," soldiers (used here to cover all members of the Armed Forces: soldiers, Marines, airmen and women, and sailors) would fire their weapons away from their "targets," or pretend to shoot. One investigation found -- and these studies have been replicated  -- that in World War I only about 5% of people shot to kill; in World War II, about 15% of people shot to kill. By the US war in Vietnam, the rate at which soldiers were shooting to kill was found to be 90%. Today, that number could be even higher. What happened? Training evolved to meet the military's goals.*There is a science that examines the mental and physical effects of killing and combat on the human psyche; it is called killology. It is the science of circumventing the conscience.*In order to get an otherwise psychologically healthy individual to kill, US military training has been developed to bypass the conscience and have the act of killing -- the act of firing one's weapon with the intent to kill -- become reflexive. Our conscience knows that taking another human life is wrong. We don't want to do it; we know that it is the worst possible thing we could do. So the training has been developed to teach a soldier to kill without thinking, without filtering through the conscience. When we take the time to think -- to filter through the conscience -- we make better decisions. And in the case of war and killing, the vast majority of us already have decided. In fact, 99% of us have decided by default that we will not choose to kill. The military comprises less than 1% of the total US population. When you add veterans to that number, it still only creeps up to 7%, and some of them, of course, had been drafted; they didn't volunteer to join the military. And did volunteers join the military with a desire to kill, or for some other purpose? In my experience, talking as I do to members of the military everyday, people that volunteer hold a sincere desire to serve and protect and to do something bigger than themselves. We call it "the service," after all. The people who join the military are some of the most beautiful, selfless, and loving people you could know. Sure, there are some cynical and self-serving reasons we could suggest for why people join the military, and there are real accounts of skinheads and other racists who were enlisting during the US invasion of Iraq, but that's not the rule. By and large, today's 1% joined the military out of a deep love and affection for humanity, not because they want to be killers. And they suffer consequences for the same reasons. It is the same love for humanity and desire to serve, I believe, that causes them to experience deep trauma once their conscience processes the results of what they've done, the deaths and the pain they've been a part of. Military training dulls the conscience, but not forever. Very likely, the conscience is going to come back. We all can relate to that just through our normal experiences of life. If we have an argument with someone we love and don't handle ourselves well, it nags at us. Our conscience tells us we've done something wrong. Now, put that on the scale a million times greater: killing someone or failing to prevent an egregious act in war. Even being trained to kill can and does cause trauma because it is so foreign from what our instincts tell us is right. This trauma, these wounds to the soul - moral injuries - are caused by transgressions against the conscience.Hundreds of thousands of veterans are struggling with this trauma, which is different than the trauma that is experienced by a rape survivor or a hijack survivor. It's not characterized by the hyper-vigilance or fear for one's life that we see in those cases. Moral injury is an inner conflict. The Marines did a study in 2011 that revealed that much of the trauma the service members were experiencing was about guilt and betrayal of conscience. So, is humanity predisposed to violence? I don't think so. We've allowed ourselves to be deceived by not only the military industrial complex, which profits from war, of course, but also by all the major pillars of our society: our government, our schools, our media, and even our churches.  They all tell us that violence is human nature. Even the peace movement falls victim to this myth. We think, "people who join the military are different from me. They can kill. I can't kill." Well, what I've learned, and what the evidence shows is that they can't kill either - not without consequences.Between 22 and 35 veterans -- depending on who is counting -- and an average of one active duty service member are killing themselves every day.Remember, veterans make up just 7% of the population, yet they represent 20% of the suicides in this country. That's a very telling and shameful number. So what's a soldier of conscience to do? Too often, soldiers in crisis believe they have only two choices: violate their conscience or violate their orders. Of the two, violating their orders is a piece of cake. Maybe they'll get court martial, go to jail, get busted down in rank, lose some pay. Maybe they'll get kicked out with a bad discharge. That's finite, that's measurable, it's manageable by most people. But the violation of the conscience? We are just beginning to understand its consequences, and they can be immeasurable. It's important that people know there is a third option: conscientious objection -- a legal pathway through which one can apply for discharge by affirming our natural predisposition for peace, by affirming the power of conscience. Maria Santelli is Executive Director of the Center on Conscience & War, a 75-year old organization founded to provide technical and community support to conscientious objectors to war. Based in Washington, D.C., Santelli has been working for peace and justice since 1996.Beverly Bell, Natalie Miller, and Emily Simmons helped with this article.Stay tuned for part two of Santelli's guest-authored article series next week.Copyleft Other Worlds. Chandigarh, Sept. 11(ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday credited the poor people for implementation of the One Rank, One Pension (OROP) scheme and said that his government began working on it from the first day in office. "I had said that we will work on OROP and work began right from the time we assumed office. The credit for implementation of OROP goes to the poor of the nation," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing a rally here. "The previous government had allocated Rs. 500 crore for OROP, but when we looked into the matter further we realised the required amount is Rs. 10,000 crore," he added. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had last week announced OROP for the veterans. The scheme announced by the government will take 2013 as the base year to calculate pensions and date of implementation will be July1, 2014. The period for review was five years, something that has been a major sticking point. (ANI) Reported by ANI News 9 hours ago.

The NFL and the military: a love affair as strange and cynical as ever

0
0
As another season kicks off for a league that charges the Pentagon to fund troop tributes, the NFL’s strange love affair with the military again takes center stage

This is the power of the NFL: it can brand something you respect into something nauseous. I have a lifelong fascination with the military: my grandfathers were pilots in WWII, one also in Korea. My stepfather, a man I love and respect, only retired from the Air Force this decade. I attended high school near Eglin Air Force Base, living out near Range Road, where you could sit on your roof at night and watch the bomb tests light up the underside of clouds. Most of my friends’ dads were in the service.

But just like that friend’s dad who got in your face all OORAH about how you could never dare question him (on anything) when you knew in reality that he ran Quicken for the 101st Chairborne, doing sorties on Excel columns, the NFL doesn’t have an off switch on its deployment of big words like battle and sacrifice. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell glad-handing veterans who’ve lost something, smirking under a flyover, is another avatar of the rear-echelon dudes who spent their Iraq War scanning the base doppler for tornados in the midwest and up-armoring their word rage to combat the “libturd” War on Christmas, daring you to question those who do their duty. The NFL is in the business of not being questioned, and the troops are its favorite accessory.

PM Modi lauches scathing attack on Congress for Parliament logjam, says 40 MPs conspiring to block development

0
0
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday hit out at Congress over deadlock in Parliament, saying 40 MPs are "conspiring" to hamper the country's development against the wishes of 400 MPs which is an "insult" to democracy.

In a hard-hitting speech at a public meeting, he said he decided to share his feelings before the public because 'jan sabha' (public assembly) is above Lok Sabha where the government's voice was being "throttled" despite being given a massive mandate by the people. Time has come to spread awareness about democracy in the country and for the people to pressurise their representatives to do their work in Parliament by asking questions and debating issues and letting the Houses function, he said after inaugurating a slew of projects.

The people will not forgive such opposition parties, Modi said. "Beyond Lok Sabha is 'jan sabha' and that is why I am expressing my views here. Some people (opposition) are doing this just for their arrogance. There can be nothing more unfortunate than this. The people will not forgive these parties for their conduct in Parliament," he said.

"40 MPs are conspiring to block development of the country against the wishes of the 400 MPs," the Prime Minister said attacking Congress. Noting that the region sends large number of people to the armed forces, he said his government delivered on its promise of implementing one-rank, one-pension (OROP).

The Prime Minister said no previous government paid adequate attention to the enormity of the exercise and attacked the previous UPA dispensation, saying if it had thought about it then it would not allotted only Rs 500 crore. The armed forces veterans should thank the poor people of the country for implementing OROP which entails a whopping Rs 10,000 crore expenditure per annum, he said.

Addressing the rally, Modi said, "The previous government never knew what is OROP, its responsibilities and what steps needed to be taken (to implement it) and no government thought about it. Had the previous government considered it, they would not have only earmarked Rs 500 crore." He said, "We also thought that perhaps the expenditure on OROP will be a bit more than Rs 500 crore. But when we calculated the whole scheme, its expenditure reached Rs 10,000 crore. This amount is not small. But it is also not bigger than the sacrifice made by our jawans."

The Prime Minister said, "Do not give credit to our government nor Narendra Modi (for implementation of OROP). I ask the jawans they should thank poor people and common man of the country." He also said, "Even now I am seeing some people have not left their plans to hold protest on this issue. They thought that this issue was so complicated that they would be able to exploit the issue for next 5 years."
