*About SelectMDx* ^TM*for Prostate Cancer*

Of the nearly 2 million prostate biopsies performed each year, less than a third find cancer. Most of these men could have avoided a painful and invasive prostate biopsy procedure, with its associated side effects and costs. SelectMDx for Prostate Cancer is a proprietary urine-based, molecular diagnostic test that offers a non-invasive "liquid biopsy" method to identify patients at low risk for prostate cancer, helping to both reduce unnecessary prostate biopsy procedures with their concomitant complications and expense and to identify those men at increased risk of harbouring high-grade disease who may benefit most from earlier detection.

The Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) will present its highest annual awards to two members of Congress, a professional organization, a physician and a congressional staff member for their support of the military community. The ceremony will be held April 12 on Capitol Hill.

Reps. Mac Thornberry (R-Texas), chairman of the House Armed Services Committee (HASC), and Joe Heck (R-Nev.), chairman of the HASC Subcommittee on Military Personnel, each will receive the Col. Arthur T. Marix Congressional Leadership Award. The MOAA Distinguished Service Award will go to the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) and Dr. Steven Scott, medical director of the Tampa Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. Robert “Bob” Simmons, HASC majority staff director, will receive the Col. Paul W. Arcari Meritorious Service Award.

MOAA is the nation’s largest and most influential association of active duty, National Guard, Reserve, retired and former military officers and their families and survivors. The association annually recognizes individuals or organizations that strongly support servicemembers and their families.

The Col. Arthur T. Marix Congressional Leadership Award will be given to Thornberry and Heck for their strong leadership and advocacy to sustain fair compensation and benefits for the uniformed services community. Marix founded MOAA in 1929 and served as the association’s first president until 1944.

The IACP and Dr. Scott will receive MOAA’s Distinguished Service Award, which honors individuals or organizations that are not members of Congress but have been consistent supporters of national defense and the uniformed services community.

The IACP is being recognized for outstanding efforts to reintegrate returning veterans into civilian law enforcement positions and Dr. Scott for his leadership role in improving the lives of America’s ill, injured and disabled veterans and their families.

Simmons will be recognized with MOAA’s Col. Paul W. Arcari Meritorious Service Award for his initiative and advocacy to sustain fair compensation and benefits for the uniformed services community. This is Simmons second Meritorious Service Award. Arcari was MOAA’s director of Government Relations for 14 years, retiring in 2001.

The Kingsley Association is partnering with The City of Pittsburgh and Google to provide public Wi-Fi to a significant portion of Larimer and East Liberty.

Pittsburgh, PA (PRWEB) March 09, 2016

The Kingsley Association on behalf of the Larimer neighborhood, along with The City of Pittsburgh and Google today announced a partnership to provide public Wi-Fi to a significant portion of Larimer and portions of East Liberty, including the East Liberty Gardens, Enright Court, and the Phase I site currently under development by McCormick, Baron, Salazar (MBS) and Allies & Ross Management and Development Corporation, as part of the Choice Neighborhoods program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). ConnectedHome, a pilot initiative developed by HUD, is designed to accelerate broadband adoption by children and families living in HUD-assisted housing, which the city is now building as part of a $30 million grant they received for revitalization efforts.

The network will consist of an estimated fourteen to twenty outdoor meshed access points along with all supporting network controllers, switches, routers, access antennas and subscriber antennas within the neighborhoods. In addition to the outdoor coverage, the network will also provide Wi-Fi coverage inside the Kingsley Association.

Once the preliminary planning has been approved and construction begins, the project is estimated to take between eight to ten weeks to complete.

"This is a major step on our quest to bridge the digital divide in Pittsburgh,” said Mayor William Peduto. “We are thrilled to be working with HUD, Google and the Kingsley Association to bring public Wifi to Larimer. Expanding access to technology and information is essential to creating equal opportunities for all Pittsburghers."

Google Pittsburgh is providing a grant worth $150,000 to make this project possible, in addition to two subsequent years of maintenance and support costs. Google has been providing community grants to a variety of organizations throughout Pittsburgh since 2010, focused on STEM education, digital inclusion, carbon reduction, and technical infrastructure to increase the capacity of nonprofit organizations.

“According to 2013 census data, more than 20% of Pittsburgh homes lack internet access,” said Kamal Nigam, Engineering Director and head of Google's Pittsburgh office. “Google’s core mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. As part of that mission and in partnership with The Kingsley Association, we are happy to support installation of a Wi-Fi network that will increase internet access for our neighbors!”

Malik Bankston, Executive Director of the Kingsley Association stated “Our goal is to bridge the digital divide and provide opportunities for every child to build a brighter future and to achieve their dreams.“

Velociti Inc., a leading technology deployment company, has partnered with Google on several Public Wi-Fi projects and will be responsible for the site survey, design, physical deployment, network certification and ongoing support ensuring the communities’ network is always operating according to the quality standards set by Google, the City of Pittsburgh and the Kingsley Association.

“Programs like ConnectedHome and Grants provided by Google which bring high-speed access to developing neighborhoods are critical to the future of these families and our Country. We are extremely proud to be a part of these important ground breaking initiatives,” said Damian J. Propes, Account Manager for Velociti.

Dear Presidential Candidates: Please Stop Insulting and Making Fun of Me

$
0
0
When Bernie Sanders compared the ridiculous behavior of the GOP candidates to people with mental health conditions, it felt like a punch in the stomach. The crowd erupting in laughter felt like another punch. I'm getting tired of being beat up in this race.

I'm tired of being stigmatized, made fun of, and stereotyped by presidential candidates because I have a mental health condition. I'm a compassionate, liberal, mature graduate student in music education at NYU (3.9 GPA) with dear friends from diverse religions and backgrounds. A person's character and how they treat others is what matters to me, not their religion, race, country of origin, immigration status, sexual orientation, gender or background.

I don't attack people who disagree with me, make fun of people with physical disabilities or use stigmatizing language. I don't call people "lunatics""sickos""crazies." Why? Because of compassion, integrity, and kindness; qualities I believe are important in leaders.

Also, this kind of careless language fuels discrimination and stigma which actually prevents people from seeking mental health care, which is the opposite of what needs to happen. It's incredibly stigmatizing to label someone as mental ill because they are behaving in a negative way, or because you wildly disagree with their policies. Being racist, offensive, and lacking compassion and wisdom isn't a mental illness.

I'm a Christian with Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, atheist etc friends. I'm 100% for gay marriage and equal rights for all. I try to love my neighbor as myself, help people in need and turn the other cheek. I don't ignore the central tenants of Christianity for biblical passages taken out of context, used to divide us rather than unite us. I volunteer every Saturday, I'm a mental health advocate, and I'm a dedicated music teacher.

When I had half Muslim students and half Christian students in my children's music class, I learned a Muslim children's song to teach the whole class. It was a beautiful song about respecting your mother. The whole class loved the song. I want my students to grow up in a world where they appreciate and respect each other's cultures and religions.

We have to think about great leaders in history. We admire them because of their commitment to equality and justice for all people. They would never make fun of people with physical disabilities or carelessly throw out words like "sicko" and "wacko."

I'm so tired mental illness being used as a scapegoat for gun control. As John Oliver so brilliantly (and hilariously) pointed out, mental health is brought up as the central issue when mass shootings are addressed, which further stigmatizes people with mental health conditions. People with mental are no more likely to be violent than the general population. People with mental illnesses do not frighten me, but I am frightened by the lack of compassion for people with mental health conditions, the lack of knowledge about mental health, and the lack of commitment to better mental health care for all.

Mental health care does need vast improvement, but it is its own issue. It's not a joke that people in crisis who are thinking of taking their lives can't get adequate mental health care. It's not a joke that veterans who have served our country and risked their lives for us are not taken care of when they return home and given the most excellent mental health care available if they have PTSD. It's not a joke; it's a nightmare. It's someone's life; it's daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers.

I don't understand how, in 2016, it's ok to stigmatize, make fun of, and stereotype a group of people who have an illness. 1 in 4 Americans who have a mental health condition deserve an apology from every presidential candidate. We deserve to be respected and valued. We aren't monsters. We are valuable, thriving members of your community. We are teachers, doctors, lawyers, artists, innovators, and entrepreneurs etc. Mental illness is not a character flaw, a weakness, a choice, and it doesn't define us. We will not be silent anymore. We deserve better.

Sincerely,

Rachel

Will Superman Or Captain America Win The Big-Screen Battle?

$

Will Superman Or Captain America Win The Big-Screen Battle? Watch VideoThis year's grudge match between Marvel and DC may all come down to characters who've (so far) been the studios' weakest links: Captain America or Superman.

Two of the comic franchises' movies this year are conspicuously similar. DC's "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and Marvel's "Captain America: Civil War" feature some of their most popular heroes fighting not only villains, but each other.

Both films pit an everyman hero with powers against a wealthier one who uses technology.

And for both franchises, the wealthy hero seems to be the fan favorite.

A quick look at box office records says it all. The top four highest domestic grossing superhero films in history are Batman and Avengers movies. And when it comes to ticket sales, Iron Man is the most popular Avenger, with one of his solo films raking in the most money.

Yet the success of these two upcoming films and their respective franchises may come down to less-popular heroes holding the spotlight: Superman and Captain America.

The competition gets even more fierce when you think about the similarities between the characters –– from first appearing around World War II to representing the ultimate patriot. Even their best solo films hover around the same domestic box office rank.

And both characters have a pretty hit-or-miss past when it comes to the big screen.

Beyond caped-crusader films, Ben Affleck and Robert Downey Jr. are veterans when it comes to making movies that earn more than $100 million domestically. What does that amount to? A wash.

But Henry Cavill is the only returning lead in DC's flick, and even though Iron Man heads the fight against Captain America in "Civil War," it's not Tony Stark's name in the movie's title.

Cavill and Chris Evans are arguably stars still just a rung away from top billing. This could really be their battle.

Whichever superhero performs best at the box office may just decide the winner of this year's Marvel vs. DC big-screen competition.

"Batman v Superman" drops March 25, and "Captain America: Civil War" debuts in May.

This video includes clips from Warner Bros. / "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,"  Walt Disney Studios / "Captain America: Civil War," CBS, Warner Bros. / "Superman Returns" and NBC /  "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," and images from Marvel, DC Comics and Getty Images.
