Woman power saves India blushes at Rio

*They hail from four different corners of the country and have contrasting tales of struggle to tell but P V Sindhu, Sakshi Malik, Dipa Karmakar and Lalita Babar today stand united as the confident new face of woman power in Indian sports which saved a floundering Olympic campaign.*

Not all of them got medals with Sindhus badminton silver and Sakshis wrestling bronze being the two outstanding moments. But they were equals when it came to effort and perseverance in what is called the greatest show on earth.

The quartet is a study in contrast, not just for where they come from but also for how they have gone about chasing their dreams.

Sindhu, who is shining the brightest right now with a silver that was won after pushing the reigning world No.1 Carolina Marin of Spain to the wall, comes from the southern corner of the country.

Daughter of an Arjuna awardee volleyball player P V Ramana, she did not need outside inspiration to warm up to sports. But the 21-year-old chose to pursue an individual craft in badminton after watching Pullela Gopichand become the All England champion in 2001.

She would go on to become Gopichands protege, encouraged by a sporting family which had the wherewithal to give wings to her dreams.

Nurtured and supported well, Sindhu has today outshone a certain Saina Nehwal, again a woman, who redefined sporting excellence in India with her feats.

At the other end of the spectrum is Sakshi, a lively 23-year-old hailing from Haryana up north. She comes from a state where female foeticide remains a concern besides the social boundaries set for women.

Perhaps her tremendous will to fight, even after trailing in all the three bouts leading up to that bronze in Rio, came from the spirit which an average woman has to dig from to survive in the badlands of northern India where the fairer sex is yet to get a fair deal.

The Rohtak village, which cannot stop celebrating her bronze right now, had once questioned and even criticised her parents for letting their daughter pick sport as a career.

But to the credit of her bus conductor father and an anganwadi supervisor mother, Sakshi wasnt short of support from where it mattered.

She wasnt among the medal contenders who were hyped before the Games and had seen one of her more fancied teammates -- Vinesh Phogat -- stretchered off the mat with a grievous knee injury minutes before her bouts.

But Sakshi gave a demonstration of what it means to have nerves of steel in a sport which had not seen an Indian woman on the Olympic podium before her.

In complete contrast is the tale of Dipa Karmakar -- a shy, unassuming and focussed-to-the-point-of-being-obsessive gymnast from the small state of Tripura tucked away in the north east of the country.

By now it is well-documented as to how Dipa chose to try her luck in a sport that not many in the country considered worth pursuing, perhaps until now.

In a field crowded and dominated by the Russians, Americans, Chinese and other east Europeans, it was emotionally overwhelming to watch Dipa perform the now famous and death-defying Produnova vault, something that even the best in the world right now -- American sensation Simone Biles -- isnt confident of doing.

In Dipas case, she has fought her way up without any tangible support except for the emotional backing of her humble family. But such has been her simplicity that she has rarely complained about a nearly non-existent infrastructure for gymnastics in India.

The 23-year-old couldnt be on the podium but she ended up giving a lesson in self-belief with her fourth-place finish. Because self-belief was all she had while battling her way to scripting history.

Not many will remember Lalita Babar for long because her 3000m steeplechase run ended with her at the 10th spot in the overall standings. But that is hardly a reflection of what she accomplished at the iconic Maracana stadium.

Coming from a family of farmers in the drought-affected village of Maharashtras Satara district, the long-distance runner embodies the survival spirit of many Indians fighting to make ends meet.

In her case, she didnt just survive but created her own little piece of history in Rio.

Lalita chose the biggest stage of all to break the national record and stave off more than 7 seconds from her personal best.

She wasnt close to the worlds best but she was certainly competitive in a sport where Indians still havent found icons beyond PT Usha and Milkha Singh -- the two veterans who continue to be the faces of athletics even decades after their feats.

Combined together these four women are symbols of all the good that is coming out of the churning that the Indian society is going through as far as gender equations are concerned.

In fact, they broke barriers much before the country woke up to their genius in the Olympics.

These four achievers represent an assured Indian woman, capable of making choices, which may seem unorthodox to some, and yet remain nonchalant about it.

And thanks to their brave life choices, many more girls can dream of making a huge splash in the world of sports. Reported by Deccan Herald 18 hours ago.

Zac Brown Band Reminds Us Who Will Really Make America Great Again

Zac Brown Band members showed they’re all heart when they played to a full stadium at New York’s Citi Field Friday night. The Huffington Post was there as thousands of fans partied, screamed, chanted and belted out lyrics to the group’s catchy songs, including “Homegrown,” “Knee Deep” and “Colder Weather.”

But, in between sing-alongs and covers of Frank Sinatra’s “The Way You Look Tonight” and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” lead singer Zac Brown took the time to shed light on what’s important to him and his bandmates. The group raised $40,000 that night just from ticket sales for their non-profit organization Camp Southern Ground, which aims to give children of all abilities the opportunity to experience the magic of the outdoors. Brown also gave thanks to our military and those men and women who’ve served our country. The band has partnered with Wells Fargo to introduce concertgoers to the No Barriers Warrior Strong Pledge and Warriors to Summits, a program that empowers a team of veterans and transitioning service members with disabilities to work together to live a life of purpose.

With Billy Westfall & his fiancée Monica at Citi Field! Tonight’s show was dedicated to our nation's extraordinary veterans and active military. Join us and @WellsFargo in honoring them.

While performing their hit single “Chicken Fried” ― featuring the lyrics, “Salute the ones who died, the ones that give their lives / So we don’t have to sacrifice all the things we love” ― the group brought serviceman Billy Westfall (pictured above) out onstage and honored him with a huge roar of applause from the crowd. And right then, Brown took the time to remind all of us who will make America great again.

“It’s not the tippy-top that matters, it’s the people,” Brown told the audience. As more cheers erupted, he continued, “It’s the heart of America that makes it [the best country in the world], it’s the people. Don’t ever forget that.”

It’s a sentiment that currently rings true. America and the world have been facing some trying times of late ― with everything from mass shootings to the presidential elections. Although many people at their concerts have differing views on a range of topics, the band knows music can transcend any issue.

“It’s really just about taking care of each other, being my brothers keeper, trying to be tolerant and trying to be civil,” Brown told CBS last month, referencing the idea that music unites their audience. “Bob Marley said, ‘The one good thing about music is when it hits you, you feel no pain.’ And that’s true. Being able to create things that make people feel good is an honor.”

Zac Brown Band is currently on its Black Out The Sun Tour, wrapping up on September 3 in Saratoga Springs, New York.

Imugene Ltd (ASX:IMU) has received approval from the Faculty of Medicine, Chiang Mai University of Thailand to start site activation process for the Phase 1b/2 study of its HER-Vaxx immuno-oncology therapy in gastric cancer.

HER-Vaxx is a cancer immunotherapy designed to treat HER-2 positive gastric cancer, a cancer with increased levels of a growth-promoting protein called the HER-2 receptor.

Immuno-oncology is a relatively new but highly promising field that uses the method of activating a patient's immune system against tumour growth.

The approval in Thailand follows approvals from Taipei Veterans General Hospital in Taiwan and the University of Hong Kong.

Thailand, Taiwan and Hong Kong and are three of the eight study sites participating in the initial Phase 1b portion of the upcoming Phase 1b/2 study.

The initial Phase 1b will enrol up to 18 patients to be treated with HER-Vaxx in combination with chemotherapy to interrogate three dose levels.

This first stage is to obtain safety, immunogenicity (a measure of how many of the HER-2 antibodies are produced), evaluate the booster schedule and determine the optimal dose to take into the Phase 2 study.

The larger, open label Phase 2 study will enrol around 68 patients randomised into two arms of either HER-Vaxx plus standard-of-care or standard-of-care alone.

Gastric cancer represents an area of high unmet medical need, particularly in Asian countries.

Imugene had $1.6 million in cash as at 30 June 2016.

How did government pick Urjit Patel as next RBI governor?

$
0
0
Raghuram Rajan's abrupt announcement of his departure as governor of the Reserve Bank of India came as a nasty surprise to many, especially his fans in the investment community, but the way Urjit Patel was chosen as his successor has been anything but.

Aides to Prime Minister Narendra Modi have sought to show that the search and selection process has been deliberate and controlled, that the nation's leader and the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley were closely involved, and that the government is fully behind the RBI's battle to control inflation.

Critically for the stability of financial markets, Patel lent his name to the panel that drew up the blueprint for formally adopting a consumer inflation target of 4%, as well as creating a new Monetary Policy Committee to steer interest rates and help India hit that goal.

AT A GLANCE

· Modi and Jaitley made the final decision -aide
· Top Modi aide managed selection committee
· Economist of stature, team player sought - panel member
· Modi did not interview candidates, but knows and likes Patel
· Government backs RBI's inflation-targeting overhaul

At the same time, the officials have stressed that no single individual should again dominate the central bank in the way that Rajan did over his three-year term. Where Rajan is known for pithy one-liners at news conferences and speeches larded with social criticism, Patel is seen as more of a backroom technocrat who avoids the limelight.

Rajan's shock announcement on the afternoon of June 18, a Saturday, caught the government off-guard -- Jaitley was watching a movie at home with his family and took more than two hours to issue a public statement.

The recovery of composure was quick, though. A shortlist of potential successors was floated before the evening was out. Patel, the 52-year-old deputy governor who takes over from Rajan on September 4, was on it, along with a clutch of other contenders that included veterans of the RBI.

On Saturday evening, exactly nine weeks later, the choice was made public. And it was done without Modi holding meetings about the job with any of the candidates, according to sources with direct knowledge of the process.

While Modi may have been involved in the final decision on Patel, he wanted to "keep his distance" in the weeks before as the appointment committee ran the process, one aide told Reuters.

"Lobbying does not get you such a job -- but Modiji's confidence in Patel was a big factor," the official told Reuters.

Patel has wide international policy experience. He worked at the IMF as an economist from 1990 to 1995, and for Boston Consulting Group and Indian conglomerate Reliance Industries.

Sources said Patel had been vetted and his candidacy blessed by the Hindu-nationalist umbrella group, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), that backs Modi's nationalist party.

That marks a big change from its attitude to Rajan, who came under fire from the RSS camp and in particular from lawmaker Subramanian Swamy who demanded he be fired for being "mentally not fully Indian". Rajan this month denounced the personal attacks he had faced as "abominable".

Patel is looked on favourably as dependable and low-key, with no ambition to upstage the government. Rajan, by contrast, drew RSS ire by straying into politically sensitive territory in high-profile speeches in which he said social tolerance was vital to a country's economic development. That was perceived as an implied attack on the Hindu-nationalist agenda of the RSS and other supporters of Modi. Rajan has denied criticising the government.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU

Modi warmed to Patel at a face-to-face meeting earlier this year, when the central banker was given an extension to his term as deputy governor in charge of monetary policy, said a second Modi aide.

"Patel has a direct working equation with the Prime Minister," this aide said, using an Indian-English expression for a personal relationship, adding the prime minister valued Patel as a "clear thinker" and appreciated his "direct approach".

The only sign of nervousness senior officials betrayed was in their initial suggestion that the next governor would be named by the time of Rajan's final policy meeting on Aug. 9.

But, after financial markets remained calm despite Rajan's announcement that he would not seek a second term, they reverted to a timeline that would allow just enough time for an orderly handover - as was the case with Rajan's own appointment three years ago.

Throughout, the Prime Minister's Office has owned the process - reflecting Modi's determination to centralise decision making in India's sprawling and often recalcitrant bureaucracy - with Cabinet Secretary PK Sinha heading the selection committee.

In its initial recommendations in July, the panel called for the next RBI governor to be a technocrat, and not a bureaucrat; a macro-economist; and team player.

The successful candidate needed to be an individual of stature who could also ensure continuity at the RBI, one of the panel's members told Reuters after Patel's appointment.

Jaitley met Modi to discuss the RBI succession on Thursday. A five-strong candidate list was then submitted to the selection panel, with the field led by Patel and also featuring contenders such as India's IMF Executive Director Subir Gokarn and World Bank Chief Economist Kaushik Basu.

The selection committee provided its feedback after a lengthy session on Friday. It did not recommend any name; nor did it formally interview candidates, the member said, adding the final decision to pick Patel was made by Modi and Jaitley.

INFLATION HAWK

The choice shows that Modi is paying more than just lip-service to the fight against inflation.

Modi endorsed the inflation fight in his Independence Day speech last Monday, and that will shield Patel as he seeks to consolidate the inflation-targeting framework brought in under the leadership of Rajan.

"While we have embraced the idea of the MPC, it has yet to be tested," said another senior government official. "You need a smooth transition from the current system of decision making. Patel can ensure that there are no hiccoughs."

Also, with the inflation rate now pushing above 6%, it is vital to send a clear message to investors that the government would not waver in its resolve to keep inflation in check, this official added.

"It is very important that the credibility we have acquired in managing inflation doesn't get dented," the official also said.

DOYLESTOWN, PA (PRWEB) August 22, 2016

Around 15th Anniversary of September 11th Attacks, Travis Manion Foundation will Host Annual 9/11 Heroes Run 5K Series Across the Globe

Approaching the 15th anniversary of the September 11th attacks, the Travis Manion Foundation will host the 9/11 Heroes Run 5K race series. The annual race will unite the community to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on 9/11, as well as to honor our military and first responders that serve our country and our communities. All races are coordinated by volunteer local race directors within their own communities.

Proceeds from the 9/11 Heroes Run will benefit the Travis Manion Foundation, which empowers veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations.

The 9/11 Heroes Run series was inspired by Marine 1st Lt. Travis Manion, who was killed by a sniper in Iraq in April 2007 as he selflessly protected his battalion. Before his final deployment, Travis visited Rescue One in NYC—famous for losing almost all of their men on 9/11—and returned home with deeper passion about why he was fighting in Iraq. At its heart, the 9/11 Heroes Run is a tribute to a personal commitment to never forget the heroes of that day. In its eighth year, the 9/11 Heroes Run national race series will be held in more than 50 locations around the U.S. and the world.

“Knowing that so many people gave their lives during the 9/11 attacks touched my brother Travis in a way that would forever change him,” said Ryan Manion Borek, President of Travis Manion Foundation. “Six years after 9/11, my brother also gave his life for his country, so every year we gather communities together to run a 5K, not just to honor the fallen, but to continue the legacies of character, leadership, and service that they left behind. We are looking forward to this exciting race season and uniting people around the world to continue those legacies and redefine America’s national character.”

Last year, more than 30,000 people participated in races around the world. The Travis Manion Foundation invested over $151,000 back into the local race communities to support military, veterans, first responders and their families. National sponsors of the events include Comcast NBC Universal, CBS Radio, and J. Walter Thompson Worldwide. To learn more and to register for a race, visit http://www.911heroesrun.org.

About Travis Manion Foundation:

The Travis Manion Foundation is a qualified 501(c)(3) that is dedicated to empowering our nation’s veterans and families of fallen heroes to develop character in future generations. In 2007, 1st Lt Travis Manion (USMC) was killed in Iraq while saving his wounded teammates. Today, Travis' legacy lives on in the words he spoke before leaving for his final deployment, "If Not Me, Then Who..." Guided by this mantra, veterans continue their service, develop strong relationships with their communities, and thrive in their post-military lives. As a result, communities prosper and the character of our nation’s heroes live on in the next generation.
