Employers that value military experience are willing to invest the time and money to recruit and hire military veterans. Dozens of employers and hundreds of veterans will participate in the Corporate Gray Military-to-Civilian Job Fair at the Virginia Beach Convention Center on Wednesday, February 12th. This military-friendly event, sponsored by Corporate Gray, is especially for separating, retiring, former, or retired military personnel of all ranks and services, including current and former members of the military reserves and National Guard, and their family members seeking employment.
Corporate Gray, a military-to-civilian transition firm, indicates that the companies attending this event are committed to hiring veterans because each employer has paid a registration fee to meet military job seekers who may attend for free. These companies value the military training, experience, and skills that veterans bring to the workplace. After a previous Corporate Gray Job Fair, a Lockheed Martin recruiter indicated “On a scale of 1 (low) to 5 (high), candidate fit was a 5.”
Carl Savino, President of Corporate Gray, believes “The men and women leaving the Armed Forces have skills which are directly transferable to the civilian work world. Employers can find disciplined, motivated team players and leaders who want to learn the mission and work together to accomplish it. They want trained and experienced personnel and they need employees who adapt well to change, as all military members do when they take on new assignments." Defense contractors and government agencies can also find candidates with active DoD security clearances and people who have experience with specific defense systems.
This military-to-civilian job fair has attracted employers that represent a wide variety of industries and have many types of positions available. Many of the top defense-related companies will attend, including Lockheed Martin, The Boeing Company, BAE Systems, L-3 Unidyne, DynCorp International, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Alion Science and Technology.
Participating employers from outside the defense industry include Amazon.com, Coca-Cola, HP (Hewlett-Packard), Sentara Healthcare, Shentel, First Command Financial Services, GEICO, and Virginia Beach City Public Schools. Federal and state government agencies, local police departments, associations, and schools will also participate.
While some people do not attend job fairs because they are planning to move out of the area once they leave the service, they should be aware that 50% of the companies surveyed at a recent job fair also had openings outside of the local area – regionally, nationwide, and worldwide. The February 12th Job Fair at the Virginia Beach Convention Center will be open from 9 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
