Wichita State, the last undefeated team left entering the tournament will be looking to become the first team since the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers that went 32-0 to finish with an unblemished record. The Shockers are currently 34-0 and easily won the Missouri Valley Conference and will go into the tournament as the second ranked team in the country. Led by senior Cleanthony Early (15.8 points per game, 5.9 rebounds per game), the Shockers are hoping to build on last season’s Final Four appearance with a title in 2014.
The Louisville Cardinals, coached by Rick Pitino, finished their season with a 29-5 record and after beating Connecticut in the finals of the American Athletic Conference, have the momentum needed to get through the tournament. They are looking to repeat as National Champions and win the fourth overall title in school history. Prior to 2013, they had also won the championship in 1980 and 1986.
One team that could make it far in the tournament competed in the same conference as Louisville, Memphis. The Tigers were knocked out of the AAC Tournament by the second place Connecticut Huskies, but they still finished the season with a 23-9 record including a 12-6 mark in the conference. They have the 34th best RPI ranking in the country.
All the March Madness excitement will begin at the UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio on March 18-19 when the first round will be held. From March 20-22, the second and third rounds will be held at the First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y., BMO Harris Bradley Center in Milwaukee, Wis., Amway Center in Orlando, Fla., Veterans Memorial Arena in Spokane, Wash, PNC Arena in Raleigh, N.C., AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, Viejas Arena in San Diego, Calif. and Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Each regional round of games will be held at four of the most popular basketball venues in the country including the FedEx Forum in Memphis, Tenn., Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y., and Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind. By the time just four teams remain, the action will be held at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The home of the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys will host the National Semifinals on April 5 and the National Championship on April 7.
