A Marine claims that he went to a local Pizza Hut and was asked by the restaurant manager to remove his jacket because it featured Marine patches that the manager believed to be gang symbols.
“I decided to go to Pizza Hut for their lunch buffet after work and was approached by the manager who came to tell me that for the safety of the patrons and staff they do not allow people in the restaurant wearing gang colors,” wrote the user, Rick Libertas Semper, on his Facebook page. “I was wearing my black leather jacket that has 4 patches and the back of the jacket is embroidered. One patch says USMC, the other patch says Marine Combat Veteran, the 3rd patch is the unit patch for 3rd Marines 3rd Battalion and there is a patch of the US flag on it. The back of the jacket is embroidered with the Marine Corps Emblem.”
According to news website Rare, the Marine attempted to explain to the manager that his patches weren’t gang related and made clear that he was a veteran, not a gang member. The manager reportedly said he shouldn’t be expected to know the differences between organizations and colors.
Since his viral Facebook post, the Marine says that he has straightened out the situation with the franchise owner while adding that he believes that the younger generation doesn’t appreciate veterans as much as older generations do.
“I do believe more people are supportive of military veterans than not but what I have seen is very few young people seem to recognize veterans,” wrote the Marine in a message to Rare, “for the most part teens and people in their 20′s seem not to care.”
The Marine has reportedly yet to speak with the manager who initially confronted him.
