A gang of military veterans on motorcycles was able to intimidate the two ex-cons, forcing them to move out of the house, and both were arrested. Now, the latest reports claim that one squatter has posted bond and immediately returned to the soldier’s home.
According to reports, Julio Ortiz was arrested Monday on a grand theft charge for stealing electricity while living at the soldier’s home for more than a year. The arrest surely satisfied those outraged by the fact that legally, police didn’t have the right to kick the squatters out of Army Spc. Michael Sharkey’s home, but now, Ortiz has reportedly posted the $5,000 bond and returned to Sharkey’s home. His girlfriend Fatima Cardoso is apparently still in jail because her arrest was a probation violation.
Sharkey’s story made waves on the Internet and outraged people all over the world. Sharkey and his wife expressed their anger at how the situation unfolded.
“They are criminals,” said Sharkey to WFLA. “I am serving my country, and they have more rights to my home than I do. The people that are in this house cannot produce any documentation, lease, agreement, anything that they belong in that house.”
