Leading Michigan based liberal arts university use Preservica Cloud Edition to ensure valuable digital collections and University archives remain accessible for generations to come
Washington DC, US and Oxford, UK (PRWEB UK) 16 July 2014
Preservica, part of the Tessella group, and a world leader in digital preservation technology, research and consulting, is pleased to announce that Grand Valley State University Libraries has chosen Preservica Cloud Edition to ensure its unique digital collections are securely preserved and accessible to students and the public long into the future.
The library’s extensive and varied multi-media collection, used for research and study, includes diaries and correspondence from the Civil War era, slavery documents, 15th century printing; photographs and clippings from American military veterans from World War I to the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts; interviews and papers of the Young Lords in Lincoln Park, 1960s community activists; oral histories of Grand Rapids area founders, philanthropists, and interfaith leaders; D.J. Angus photographs and moving pictures of ca. 1930s U.S. and Mexico.
Patrick Roth, Head of Systems and Technology at Grand Valley State University Libraries adds, “Our initial focus was to make our collections available online to students and the public, however, we realized that we also needed a secure and durable way of preserving our large and growing volume of digital content. In particular we needed a system that would allow us to easily manage and migrate obsolete file formats to newer formats overtime in order to ensure our collections remain accessible and readable for future generations.”
“Preservica Cloud Edition ticked all the right boxes, and offered excellent value for money, especially compared to other systems we considered. Also being fully cloud hosted meant we did not have to purchase, operate, backup and maintain local servers and storage. However, what really swung it for us was that Preservica Cloud Edition provided digital preservation and online public access in one system – which will enable us to simplify the way we manage and publish our digital content going forward.”
Preservica Chief Executive Jon Tilbury adds, “We are very pleased that Grand Valley State University Libraries has joined the growing number of college and university archives and libraries using Preservica Cloud Edition to provide active preservation and public access to their valuable digital research and collections. We also look forward to welcoming GVSU to the newly expanded Preservica User Group and working closely with them to share ideas and shape the future of digital preservation and access.”
Preservica Cloud Edition is available from just $3,950 per year and includes a full suite of OAIS (Open Archival Information System) compatible workflows for ingest, management, storage, administration, preservation and access to digital content, as well as all hosting, backup, operations, maintenance and support to enable libraries and archives of all sizes to start actively preserving and sharing their valuable content from one system without needing to purchase and manage local servers and storage.
