Maui Wowi welcomes the latest in a growing number of veterans to become franchise owners of the international Hawaiian coffee and smoothie company. Shannon and John Portugal of Temecula, Calif., are both veterans of the United States Air Force and have traveled all over the world. Their experiences have led them to a new opportunity that captures their spirit of adventure and provides the ability to fulfill their dreams.
"In the search of our lifetime adventure, we wanted to experience something that provided us an independent lifestyle, while still allowing us to be part of an 'ohana,” said Shannon. “Maui Wowi gives us the support and community needed in order to achieve success."
Shannon has always dreamed of owning her own business and working independently. With encouragement from John and their two teenage daughters, she has made her dream a reality with Maui Wowi. The flexibility, strong support system and unique Hawaiian culture immediately resonated with the Portugals.
“As veterans, we have come to know what true teamwork and community mean and we wanted to be part of a franchise that exhibited those same traits,” said John.
Their years of service in the military have taught them the values and skills that create successful business owners, giving them a solid foundation from which to begin their journey. The Portugals plan to start with one of Maui Wowi’s most flexible business models, the mobile Ka’anapali Cart, a portable tiki hut unit that can easily be transported to local events and venues.
The mobility of the franchise model gives them the flexibility to manage their own time and be their own boss. Shannon and John plan to work events and give back to the community and organizations that are important to them. For the future, their goals include expanding into additional carts and creating a thriving catering business. As a family, the Portugals are ready to live their dream with an adventure that will last a lifetime.
