This is Kent --
SEVEN of those who stormed the beaches of Normandy were among those gathered to remember the occasion at a ceremony in Folkestone last week.
Exactly 69 years after the D-Day landings, the veterans were joined by more than 100 people in the Garden of Remembrance in Sandgate Road on Thursday.
Rev Stephen Dougal led the service, while standard-bearers from the Normandy Veterans' Association, Hythe and Romney Marsh Royal Air Force Association and local branches of the Royal British Legion, stood to attention.
Folkestone mayor Cllr Roger West and Shepway District Council chairman Cllr Pamela Carr laid wreaths at the Normandy Veterans' Association memorial, as veterans laid crosses in the rose garden.
Cllr West said: "My dad was a Normandy veteran. He went over in the second wave to Pegasus Bridge so the service was quite poignant for me.
"All these services are very moving. Afterwards we had a lovely lunch with the veterans, which was a good chance to talk to them and hear some of their incredible stories."
