Veterans in San Francisco will have a better chance of finding housing thanks to new funding being released to the city by the Department of Housing and Urban Development, in partnership with the Department of Veterans Affairs. The funding will make roughly 70 vouchers available to homeless vets, said Gene Gibson, spokeswoman for the regional office of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. "HUD and the Department of Veterans Affairs have forged an unprecedented and lasting partnership to make sure those who wore the uniform never face a life on the streets or in our shelters," HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, said in a statement. The money, released Wednesday, is part of a $60 million nationwide effort by the Obama administration to end homelessness among veterans by 2015. In a city like San Francisco, where rents are high and housing stock is limited, veterans often compete with well-paid tech workers to find a place to live.
