Volunteers Needed for National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Tampa Patch New Tampa, FL --

Looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity this summer?

There will be plenty of chances to share your time and talent when the city of Tampa hosts the 33rd National Veterans Wheelchair Games July 13-18.

The event is the largest annual wheelchair sporting event in the world. More than 600 veterans with disabilities and 2,000 spectators are expected to travel to Tampa that week.

Veterans will compete in 17 events, including air guns, archery, basketball, bowling, field, hand-cycling, motorized wheelchair rally, nine-ball, power soccer, quad rugby, softball, swimming, table tennis, track, trapshooting, weightlifting and wheelchair slalom.

As part of the event a special “Kids Day” featuring activities for local children with disabilities will also be held. Organizers expect more than 2,000 visitors for this event and most will be participating in or attending activities in the downtown Tampa area.

To facilitate the event, organizers are seeking 3,000 volunteers to help food, keep score and time events, announcer events, for data and engineering, to handle equipment and wheelchair repair, graphic arts, to weigh in athletes, communications and greet people at the airport and hotels.

Each volunteer will be asked to contribute four hours of time, and will receive two hours of training in June.
