Former Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs Joseph Benkert Joins Morrison & Foerster

Mr. Benkert, who oversaw 400+ CFIUS matters while serving as a senior official at the Department of Defense, further strengthens the firm’s growing National Security Group

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) October 24, 2018

Morrison & Foerster, a leading global law firm, is pleased to announce that Joseph Benkert has joined the firm in Washington, D.C., as a Senior Advisor in its National Security Group. Mr. Benkert served as a leading civilian official in the Department of Defense (DoD) from 2003-2009 under both the Bush and Obama administrations, including as Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Security Affairs after being nominated by President Bush and confirmed by the Senate. His coming to Morrison & Foerster highlights the firm’s continued commitment to providing clients with practical and strategic advice in the midst of unprecedented regulatory and compliance scrutiny of national security issues.

Mr. Benkert was most recently a Vice President of The Cohen Group, a global consultancy group led by former Secretary of Defense William Cohen. Among other things, Mr. Benkert regularly worked with Morrison & Foerster over the last five years to help advise clients on transactional matters that were subject to review by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). As a result of joining Morrison & Foerster, he will now advise a wide range of the firm’s clients on CFIUS and national security-related matters, complementing the firm’s already strong capabilities in this area.

While at the DoD, Mr. Benkert led the department’s involvement in numerous complex matters before CFIUS. He oversaw more than 400 CFIUS cases and represented DoD in CFIUS deliberations determining whether a foreign investment in a U.S. company or its operations represented a national security risk. Mr. Benkert’s responsibilities at DoD also included managing technology security policy, the reform of export control processes, several sensitive nonproliferation projects, and a broad range of other defense-related issues. He continues to serve as an advisor on DoD’s Threat Reduction Advisory Committee.

“After working with Joe and seeing the value that he delivered to our clients in navigating highly complex cross-border deals in front of CFIUS, we are delighted to officially welcome him to our team,” said Nick Spiliotes, co-head of the firm’s National Security Group. “Joe’s extensive experience in CFIUS matters, as well as in export controls, will be invaluable at a time when foreign-led investments in the U.S. are under increased scrutiny. Our clients will benefit greatly from having access to both Joe, who was the CFIUS lead at the DoD, and John Carlin, who was the CFIUS lead at the Department of Justice.”

Mr. Benkert’s coming to Morrison & Foerster further strengthens the firm’s growing National Security Group. In July, Morrison & Foerster announced that John E. Smith, former director of the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, who was centrally involved in all aspects of developing, implementing, and enforcing U.S. government sanctions laws over the last decade, had joined as a co-head of the group. Other key additions to the National Security Group since the start of last year include Mr. Carlin, also a co-head and former Assistant Attorney General in the Department of Justice’s National Security Division, who among other things, advises major foreign investment companies on their CFIUS strategy, Robert S. Litt, former General Counsel for the Director of National Intelligence, and David A. Newman, who served as the Associate White House Counsel and on the Staff of the National Security Council.

“Our National Security Group is focused on counseling businesses on a broad range of challenging regulatory and compliance matters including CFIUS review, export control restrictions, sanctions and embargoes, and classified activities,” said Mr. Carlin. “Joe is one of the world’s leading consultants and a top former defense official, and his addition further enhances our unparalleled ability to help our clients effectively navigate these issues.”

Prior to working at the DoD, Mr. Benkert was a career Navy officer with extensive experience both in operational command and in national security policy formulation and implementation. Mr. Benkert was the Executive Director of the Chief of Naval Operations Executive Panel, an advisory group for the Navy’s senior uniformed leader, and served in the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy both as a senior military assistant and as the Director of European Policy. His commands included a frigate, a guided missile cruiser, two destroyer squadrons, and operational groups. Mr. Benkert received his Master in Public Policy from Harvard Kennedy School and his Bachelor of Science from the U.S. Naval Academy.

“I decided to join MoFo because of its rapidly expanding national security group, highly impressive roster of global clients, and a strong Washington team including a significant number of former U.S. government officials,” said Mr. Benkert. “I look forward to working with colleagues at MoFo in advising our clients on their critical national security matters as they pertain to CFIUS, export controls, and other key issues at this important time.”

In addition to the former government officials who have joined Morrison & Foerster’s National Security Group, the firm has added a number of other former senior federal and state prosecutors and regulators in the Washington, D.C. area over recent years. Over just the last few months, the firm announced that Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax had joined as a partner in its Commercial Litigation, Trials, and Investigations + White Collar Defense groups, and that Lisa Phelan, former Chief of the National Criminal Enforcement and Washington Criminal I Sections of the Antitrust Division at the Department of Justice, had joined as a partner in its Global Antitrust Law Practice.

Tapping into the enormous potential of women voters, Purple Patriot provides a platform for women to flex their political muscles. Understanding change is a marathon not a sprint, the non-partisan app focuses on education, organization and motivation of women and their allies through the building of routine civic engagement.

OAKLAND, Calif. (PRWEB) October 24, 2018

The female sister tech team of Jean and Christine Templin from Oakland, California are on a mission to reinvent civic engagement. Through their platform, Purple Patriot, they are demanding equality and inclusion by giving women the opportunity to rewrite the rules, with our voices, votes and wallets.

Women are a major political power in this country. They yield a tremendous amount of strength at the ballot box and in the check-out line. Women control over 85% of all purchasing decisions or an estimated $15 trillion dollars spent annually, and are over 50% of the population. Voting occurs daily with their purchases along with every two years in the elections.

Tapping into this enormous potential, Purple Patriot provides a platform for women to flex their political muscles. Understanding change is a marathon not a sprint, the non-partisan app focuses on education, organization and motivation of women and their allies through the building of routine engagement.

“We all agree on one thing, government is broken. It is time to build new systems that include us all and reflect our communities.” Christine Templin, Co-Founder

Purple Patriot makes it simple to get started and easy to stay involved for everyone- from those who are new to the process to the experienced veterans. It is a one-stop shop to learn about issues, your elected officials and the brands you use every day and fit involvement into busy schedules. Routines are built by tracking completed actions against weekly goals. The app has been called the “Fitbit for Politics”, encouraging users to #Take3 actions weekly to get civically fit.

The team also recently introduced the “Women Empowerment Score”, an index which ranks brands and companies on their commitment to promoting equality and inclusion for women in their workplaces. It serves as a guide for purchasing decisions and a benchmark for brands and their commitment to empowering women.

“Every day I make decision on what to purchase, the more information I have to make these decisions, the more I will purchase with impact in mind. I am a Lyft only rider, I use T-mobile and bank with First Republic, all decisions I’ve made based on impact to my community.” Jean Templin, Co-Founder

Brands are taking notice. Nike, Patagonia, Starbucks and Levis have publicly taken stances on social issues impacting their communities. These actions have impacted new sales, brand loyalty and even recruiting efforts. The power of voting with your wallet is just starting to be understood.

Purple Patriot is the mobile app reinventing civic engagement, driving equality and inclusion with our voices, votes and wallets. A non-partisan app built on the belief that we need to find common ground to move forward and collectively govern our communities. Purple Patriot is available in both iTunes and Google play. WALTHAM, Mass. (PRWEB) October 24, 2018

AssuriCare, an innovation leader within the long-term care industry, announced today that M33 Growth, a growth-stage investment firm, has made a significant investment in the company to help accelerate its efforts to enhance AssuriCare’s long-term care (LTC) SaaS-based platform.

“We have created the LTCfastpay® platform that connects care recipients, providers and insurers, and delivers tangible value to all of our customers,” said Michael Gilbert, CEO at AssuriCare. “Our platform was the first SaaS solution to enable claimants, providers and insurers to easily and reliably process payments and electronically submit verified insurance claims. We’ve continued to invest, and have remained on the cutting edge, serving tens of thousands of long-term care recipients and processing hundreds of millions of dollars of provider payments and insurance claims. Right now, there are significant opportunities to broaden and deepen our platform to better serve our customers, expand our offerings to benefit more people, and increase our overall value proposition to the long-term care industry. This partnership with M33 Growth will give us access to resources, strategies and partnerships which will enable us to fully execute on our vision. I am really impressed with the M33 team and their excellent track record helping other companies accelerate growth.”

“M33’s investment strategy is to align with market leaders,” said Gabe Ling, co-founder and managing director of M33 Growth. “The AssuriCare team has a deep understanding of the long-term care industry and have established themselves as proven innovators, creating and bringing to market solutions which solve significant problems facing long-term care recipients, providers and payers today. They stand ready to implement on an impressive roadmap that includes significant platform enhancements that will bring more value to existing customers, enable more efficient processes for providers and payers, expand their platform to the facilities market, and so much more. We are excited to partner with them to better serve their customers and meet the growing demands of this important market.”

According to the National Health Policy Forum, total spending on long-term care is more than $220 billion, or almost 10% of all US personal health care spending, and is projected to increase to almost $350 billion in 2040. As long-term care needs have grown, so have the complexities associated with evolving care models, multiple provider types and situs of care, providers’ regulatory and compliance needs, protections for long-term care workers, and an increasing landscape of public and private payers. AssuriCare’s unique LTCfastpay platform and care management services help care recipients more effectively track, manage and pay for care, help providers interact seamlessly with multiple payer sources, and help long-term care payers efficiently process verified, standardized, electronic claims submissions.

To identify the companies on the list, Franchise Business Review analyzed 18 months of data from over 26,000 veteran franchise owners representing over 250 brands regarding their overall satisfaction with their brands and their likelihood to recommend them to others.
Window Genie’s franchisees were surveyed on 33 benchmark questions about their experience and satisfaction regarding critical areas of their franchise systems, including training & support, operations, franchisor/franchisee relations, and financial opportunity.

New Program Provides Expanded Job Opportunities to Special Needs Individuals

IRVINE, Calif. (PRWEB) October 25, 2018

Infinite Electronics, Inc., a leading global supplier of electronic components serving the urgent needs of engineers through a family of highly recognized and trusted brands, has partnered with Goodwill of Orange County to create employment opportunities for high-functioning autistic individuals. This new employment program is based out of the company’s Irvine, California facility and is aimed at creating employment opportunities in roles that fully utilize the special skills of these individuals, while also fulfilling a real need within the company.

Initially starting with one group of four people, this program has now expanded to include a total of 11 workers. The employees work in small groups for three hours a day, five days a week, depending on the workload, and are led by a coach provided by Goodwill of Orange County. The goal of this employment program is to provide an opportunity for these workers to have a rewarding job and gain real job skills that can benefit them in the future. “These employees long to function as part of everyday society and having a job that they can come to each day does just that,” said Kevin Nguyen, Production Manager for Infinite Electronics who coordinates this program with the help of a business development manager from Goodwill of Orange County.

In this program the employees work in several functions that include repackaging products in the operations department and scanning materials for the sales team. Their work encompasses several of Infinite Electronics’ brands, including Pasternack, Fairview Microwave and L-com Global Connectivity. The tasks are perfectly suited for the individuals’ unique skill sets and these new employees are proving to be efficient and extremely accurate. Their efforts help prepare inventory to be ready-to-sell and have allowed the company to better fulfill its value proposition. “We are very proud to have partnered with Goodwill of Orange County to create employment opportunities for a group of deserving individuals who are often overlooked by other companies. These workers have proven themselves to be true assets to the company and we are honored to be able to offer them on-the-job training and real-world experience that will allow them to better their lives,” said Jim Dauw, Chief Operations Officer at Infinite Electronics.

Infinite Electronics launched this program during first quarter of 2018 and all feedback has been positive. The company has seen real tangible benefits and the workers recently received special recognition for their efforts with a stuffed animal giveaway. “These individuals are excited to come to work each and every day. This job gives them a sense of purpose and meaning, and they bring a happy and uplifting spirit with them each day, which inevitably spreads throughout the workplace,” said Nguyen. Infinite Electronics’ partnership employment program with Goodwill of Orange County is slated to continue indefinitely, with the possibility of further growth at the company’s Irvine, California location.

Goodwill of Orange County, which marked its 94th year of service in 2018, has supported hundreds of thousands of Orange County residents since its inception by creating and providing quality training and employment services to empower its program participants to be productive and independent. The nonprofit organization has dozens of programs that support this effort, including the Goodwill Rogers A. Severson Fitness & Technology Center, Orange County’s only facility specially designed for people suffering from chronic illnesses and physical disabilities; its global approach to serving veterans and their families, Goodwill of Orange County Tierney Center for Veteran Services, which helps former service members and their families find resources and services to meet and serve their unique needs, including housing, job placement, education, and wellness; and its Assistive Technology Exchange Center (ATEC), which provides access to more than 1,000 state-of-the-art technology devices for children and adults with disabilities. These are just a few of Goodwill of Orange County’s innovative programs that have served those facing barriers in Orange County for the past nine decades. Senate Showdown: Meet The Players From Tennessee

Senate Showdown: Meet The Players From Tennessee Watch VideoThe campaign for the open Senate seat in Tennessee is getting as much attention as any contest in the country.

And that's not only because it’s the one race where Taylor Swift is taking sides. The pop music icon is backing Phil Bredesen in her adopted home state.

He's among just a handful of Democrats with a viable shot at taking a Senate seat away from the GOP.

But Swift's high-profile endorsement — along with Bredesen's long record of soft-spoken independence from the party line and his status as a Washington outsider — still might not be enough.

That's because about 61 percent of Tennesseans voted for Donald Trump two years ago. Almost as many in the state approve of his presidency now.

And Marsha Blackburn, with her firebrand style of tea party conservatism, has positioned herself as close to Trump as any of this year's Republican Senate candidates.

Blackburn and Bredesen are running to succeed Bob Corker, the Republican chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee and a frequent Trump critic, who's stepping aside after a dozen years.

Both candidates are political veterans. A solar power executive, Bredesen was highly popular as governor for two terms, ending in 2011, and before that was mayor of Nashville. Blackburn was a department store executive and state senator before winning a House seat for the Nashville suburbs 16 years ago.

And the two don’t disagree on everything. Most notably, Bredesen says he would have voted to confirm Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court, concluding the judge was fully qualified and there wasn't enough evidence to support the sexual allegations against him.

Blackburn was enthusiastic about Kavanaugh all along.

At the same time they agree on Trump’s high court pick, though, they both disagree with his trade policies. Blackburn now says his steel and aluminum tariffs are bad for the state’s farmers and automakers. Bredesen has been saying much the same all year.

And on immigration, both favor legislation for so-called Dreamers — young people brought to the country illegally as children. And both favor a big boost in border security. But while Blackburn wants to help Trump build a wall along the Mexican border, Bredesen says there are better high-tech, less expensive options.

There's still plenty they disagree about. Reducing taxes was the reason Blackburn got into politics and she's a passionate fan of the Trump tax cut. Bredesen says the first step to needed reduction in the deficit should be closing corporate tax loopholes.

Blackburn says Obamacare should be totally repealed and replaced with a more free market system. Bredesen says he’s come around to supporting much of the Affordable Care Act but that it can stand some fixing.

Blackburn boasts of keeping a handgun in her purse and opposes new gun controls. Bredesen is in favor of new background checks for would-be buyers at gun shows.

Blackburn says businesses have a right to refuse service to gay couples. Bredesen says that's not right.

And this looks to be the only prominent Senate race in the country where net neutrality is an issue. Blackburn is chairman of the House panel with jurisdiction over the internet, and she's worked for years to pass legislation that critics say would undermine equal treatment of all content online. Bredesen says the web should be treated like a utility, and so he's committed to net neutrality. Reported by Newsy 8 hours ago.
