eWellness Healthcare sparks digital revolution in physical therapy

$
0
0
Could a virtual revolution be coming to the world of physical therapy? Imagine that instead of visiting a physical therapist (PT) for a follow-up after surgery, you log onto your smartphone and exercise under digital guidance. That’s the brainchild of Douglas MacLellan, Darwin Fogt, Curtis Hollister and David Markowski, the co-founders of eWellness (OTCQB:EWLL). They are on a quest to upend the way the estimated $35 billion market for physical therapy works in the US. Fogt struck up a friendship with MacLellan over six years ago while working as his physical therapist after a bout of back surgery. “Doug went and experienced this physical therapy and it healed him and he lost like 60 pounds,” remembers Markowski. “It changed his life.” A management team was formed, which grew to include Hollister, a top Canadian tech executive, and Markowski, an ex-investment banker, who were also friends of MacLellan’s. Together, a method was devised to deliver physical therapy as a digital rehabilitation program. In a traditional PT setting, you go to a clinic where a therapist assesses your condition, does an evaluation, sets up a plan of care and sends you home with a sheet of stick-figure exercises you’ve got to complete. Additional visits are booked to check on progress and modify treatments. Cracks showing in traditional PT model But there are flaws here. Patients don’t do the exercises when they leave the clinic. Or they might live in a place where not enough physical therapists are available. The US Department of Veterans Affairs, for example, routinely flies veterans from Alaska to San Diego, California, to get them physical therapy, points out Markowski. People might also see improvement and opt to let trips to the PT fall by the wayside.  Visits could also be delayed by weeks due to scheduling conflicts. Consider eWellness’s Phzio model by comparison. With the help of a library of nearly 1,100 exercises, a physical therapist can go to this online portal “PHZIO” and set up a regime capable of handling close to 70% of the issues a patient is suffering from, with the exception of severe or more complex injuries. The online method allows for physical therapy to be provided within hours, with assessments given via a cyber connection that comes complete with real-time monitoring and audio and text-message feedback. Additional sessions are set up and a litany of follow-on exercises is prescribed. So, even flight attendants trapped in airport lounges can take part. “We have built tools that allow us to objectively assess a patient’s range of motion and also do motion capture of particular movements. We capture all of this on video in a HIPAA compliant way,” says Markowski, referring to the government regulations that protect sensitive patient data. PHZIO system handles multiple patients at once For therapists, the system offers the chance to handle multiple clients at the same time. “The problem on the physical therapy side is that you have physical therapists who aren’t making enough money to pay off their school loans,” reports Markowski. “This is an industry that’s becoming squeezed and it hasn’t been able to deploy technology.” The PHZIO system is robust enough to handle 30 different patients online at the same time – though the suggestion is for there to be a maximum of six patients in a session at one time. READ: eWellness Healthcare to bring at-home physical therapy to Texas smartphone users Insurers also stand to benefit as the costs they pay per session for physical therapy are greatly reduced. They also see more patients seek out physical therapy instead of a trip to a general practitioner that might end in a costly X-ray or MRI ($2,600) or a year’s prescription for opioids ($6,000). “If you get patients to physical therapy first, you can avoid MRIs,” notes Markowski. “If we can get people into a physical therapy setting, there’s a higher chance of reducing the pain, solving the problems and accelerating healing without all the cost and absenteeism.” Uber-style disruption likely Markowski compares the impact eWellness intends to make to the way Uber disrupted the art of hailing taxis. “We could easily be by the end of next year, the largest physical therapy provider much like Uber is the largest ride company without having any drivers,” according to Markowski. In Uber-style fashion, if the eWellness model takes hold, Markowski envisages conducting business with an expansive network of therapists. “So, all you do is get online whenever you want to and there’s a therapist there who will pick you up,” he says. The staff at eWellness, which is based in Culver City, California, is lean at roughly 20 and there are no plans to employ an army of physical therapists directly. “My model is very much like an Uber model. For the most part, we’re going to utilize all contract labor just like Uber,” he says. “We’re just matching up the supply to the demand and we’re doing it in such a way that it’s cost-effective,” he added. The pre-revenue company saw its loss shrink 39% to $1.1 million from $1.8 million in the three months until September 30 compared with the year-ago quarter. Its cash pile also mounted over the same period, climbing to $27.7 million from $14.4 million. Posing financial headwinds are the challenges eWellness faces in getting physical therapists themselves to convert to an online system. “We have PTs and we’re getting new ones every day that come out and love this and serve it out of their clinic,” says Markowski. “But it’s not converting at the pace we want to see.” Workers comp programs are key to profits The company’s financial outlook is turning sunny, with the recent signing of a contract with First MCO, a managed care organization based in New Jersey that keeps a lid on costs for workers’ compensation programs. Indeed, workers comp is a bonanza for eWellness as case managers in this arena are charged with bringing care to patients while saving costs. Several additional multi-million dollar contracts of this sort are expected in the coming weeks and eWellness’s management expects to see its first sales next quarter. “We’re engaging in contracts that will put us nationwide pretty quickly. We’re getting contracts signed this month and we have to start delivering on them in January,” says Markowski. “We’re scaling rapidly and our profit margins will improve.” Another coup is that since November, US Medicare, which provides subsidized medical insurance for Americans over 65, has moved towards paying for telerehabilitation sessions. This will greatly increase the number of insurers who pay for eWellness’s services as many track Medicare when opting to back claims. The company also boasts a wellness program, which aims to use exercise as a preventive way to ward off disease. Its efforts drew interest from several government agencies looking to make their workforce more robust on a recent trip by Markowski to Washington, DC. Looking ahead eWellness is a bet on an industry that is in need of digital therapy. Even if the company were to gain less than 1% of market share in the $35 billion industry, it would still end up with a valuation of $1bn by Markowski’s estimates. The management team at eWellness is bullish that success will come, with Fogt moving to sell his nine physical therapy clinics just a couple of months ago. Could it be that the traditional route of physical therapy will go the way of the CD or the video cassette thanks to the wireless advance? “That model will be gone based on what we’re doing,” concludes Markowski. “Our Phzio platform allows patients and physical therapists to cut the cord from the old-school brick and mortar clinical experience.” Contact Ellen Kelleher at ellen@proactiveinvestors.com     Reported by Proactive Investors 7 hours ago.

Nearly 1,000 Smile Brands Inc. affiliated volunteers help provide pro bono dental services around the world.

IRVINE, Calif. (PRWEB) December 19, 2018

The Smiles for Everyone Foundation (“SFE Foundation”), a non-profit public charity affiliated with Smile Brands Inc. (“Smile Brands”), is proud to announce the results for its charitable initiatives throughout 2018, in which more than $3 million worth of dental services were donated to communities in need across the U.S. and abroad. During the year, the organization hosted 21 free dental clinics (“Days of Giving”), an international outpost trip to Paraguay and 15 international outreaches in Ghana, Nicaragua, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. In total, over 4,500 patients worldwide were able to receive care from dental professionals in Smile Brands’ network.

“Through the work of the Foundation, we are able to truly deliver on our promise of providing Smiles for Everyone,” says Smile Brands CEO, Steven C. Bilt. “Our impact in 2018 would not have been possible without the dedication and commitment of our Smile Brands staff and dental professionals.”

Days of Giving were held at Smile Brands affiliated offices in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Florida, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington. These events provide an opportunity for low-income and underinsured individuals to receive same-day services such as exams and x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions, all free of charge. SFE Foundation partners with local nonprofits for these events to identify individuals in need to receive these services. Nonprofits include homeless shelters, food pantries, veterans organizations, children’s groups and support service organizations for victims of domestic violence.

In July, Bilt lead a trip of fifteen Smile Brands affiliated dental professionals to Paraguay for a week-long service trip. On this trip, the team provided dental care and oral hygiene education to children and families at community centers and schools in the most impoverished areas surrounding the city of Asunción. During this trip, they also focused on establishing relationships and training dental professionals in the area in an effort to provide ongoing care in Paraguay throughout the year.

All initiatives spearheaded by the Foundation were supported by volunteers from Smile Brands’ network of offices. In 2018, nearly 1,000 dental professionals and support teams participated in the organization’s Days of Giving and international work.

“Giving back is a pillar of Smile Brands’ company culture,” says Bilt. “Watching our teams’ willingness to volunteer with the Foundation is inspiring. These opportunities, we feel, give a sense of connection and bring new meaning to the work we do.”

SFE Foundation was founded in 2011 by Bilt with the vision to support communities, both domestically and abroad, in ways only dental professionals can, by providing access to dental services. Since then, the nonprofit has delivered 19,000 smiles and donated over $14.5 million in dentistry.

More information on SFE Foundation’s charitable initiatives for 2018 and future initiatives for 2019 can be found by visiting the foundation’s website at http://www.smilesforeveryone.org.

Rockville, MD, Dec. 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Scholarships for Military Children and Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships programs for school year 2019-20 kicked off Dec. 14 and will continue accepting applications through Feb. 15.

This marks the first time the application process will happen entirely online, making it easy to create an account, save work and submit applications.  All rules and requirements for the program, as well as links to frequently asked questions are available at www.militaryscholar.org.

*Scholarships for Military Children*

Eligibility for the Scholarships for Military Children program is determined using the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System database. Applicants should ensure that they, as well as their sponsor, are enrolled in the DEERS database and have a current military dependent identification card.

A total of 500 scholarship grants, each for $2,000, will be awarded for school year. There will be at least one recipient selected at every commissary location where qualified applications are received, and additional recipients will be selected based on a pro rata basis, so more applicants will be selected from those commissaries with larger numbers of applicants.

The Scholarships for Military Children Program was created in recognition of the contributions of military families to the readiness of the fighting force and to celebrate the role of the commissary in the military family community. It is the intent of the program that a scholarship funded through contributions be awarded annually for each commissary operated by the Defense Commissary Agency worldwide.

*Heroes’ Legacy Scholarships*

The Heroes' Legacy Scholarships program honors not only those who have fallen in battle, but all who have died or have become disabled through their active military service since September 11, 2001. The program is open to their dependent unmarried children under age 23. A disability is defined as one that results in the service member being eligible for, and receiving, Traumatic Servicemembers' Group Life Insurance (TSGLI) or a permanent and total disability compensation rating of 100%.

If a student or parent is not sure whether they qualify, they can submit documentation to Fisher House Foundation which will make such determinations on a case by case basis. Documentation should be sent via email to BGawne@fisherhouse.org. Please include "Heroes' Legacy Scholarships" in the subject line. If no response is provided within one week, please call Fisher House Foundation at (888) 294-8560 to ensure the email was received.

The amount to be awarded each year depends on the amount of sponsorships and other donations designated for the Legacy Heroes' Scholarship program. Prior year recipients must reapply to be considered.

*Scholarship Search Engine*

Additionally, Fisher House Foundation has set up an extensive scholarship search engine tool for finding funding for you and your family whose service for our country qualifies you for these unique funding opportunities.  To try it out, go to: http://search.militaryscholar.org/.

Good luck and God speed in your education endeavors.

With a combination of newcomers and veterans vying for market share, it’s safe to say the competition is getting intense. And with competition comes innovation. Gone are the days of simply cutting, drying and selling organic cannabis… Now there are hundreds,… Reported by OilPrice.com 14 minutes ago.

Live Report: Meredith Music Festival 2018

Live Report: Meredith Music Festival 2018 Clash goes Down Under to sample festival culture...

It’s 38 degrees in Meredith, near Melbourne, and the wind is blowing at an alarming speed. Days earlier bush fires had roared through the surrounding countryside but today, despite the gale force winds, fires are nowhere in sight.

Instead the dominant feature on the landscape of* Meredith Festival’s* Nolan Farm is, in fact, sofas… Hundreds of them.

- - -

- - -

The festival site sits on a hilltop overlooking the one and only stage of Meredith. Lovingly named The Supernatural Amphitheatre or ‘Sup for short, the grass slopes down at an angle so ideal it’s as though Mother Nature herself designed it.

The site belongs to The Nolan Family and has done for generations. Chris Nolan founded Meredith Music Festival with two friends back in 1991. Five years later Chris suffered a brain injury and slipped into a coma which led to Locked-In Syndrome. In recent years he learnt to blink again and since then has officially opened each Meredith Festival.

He’s asked onstage “Do you declare Meredith Music Festival officially open?” Chris blinks twice, the crowd roars, the party begins.

Aunty Meredith expertly curates the line-up each year; a mix of local artists, unknown names and international headliners. With just one stage the responsibility of choice is taken away, a welcome relief from overcrowded line-ups.

UK-based artist *Mim Suleiman* plays a joyful array of her eclectic portfolio, belting out vocals in a mixture of Swahili and English. Songs from Tungi explode with culture - from tribal percussion to Chicago House. Long-term Meredith attendees have dragged sofas from sun-drenched Melbourne porches and deposited them atop the ‘Sup. Ice boxes (or ‘eskies’ as the Aussies say) full of ice cold beers and a clear view of the stage creates an easy meeting spot and personal living room.

The festival stress of losing your mates disappears, replaced with a simple “See you back at the couch.”

“That’s the beauty of Meredith,” one Hawaiian-shirted festival-goer explains “It’s just like going to a massive house party with all your mates.”

- - -

- - -

The house party leans back, legs up on eskies, ice cold beers in hand to watch *Panda Bear *perform a soulful experimental electronic set. Standing in skinny jeans behind his synth, sweep fringe in place circa Myspace ’06, he belts out bangers from 'Tomboy' and 'Person Pitch' as well as new tracks from his anticipated new album. His energy doesn’t quite match that of Mim Suleiman and his set falls a little flat.

But *The Breeders *pick it back up again with a joyous, ageless punk set that gets the entire audience bouncing and head-banging like turbo-charged teeny boppers. Yaeji delivers a magical set of pounding house rhythms and pure, stark vocals with a persona somewhere between dorky and serious.

The crowd dances joyously to 'passionfruit' and 'One More' but the set truly crescendos at 'raingurl'. In a second power move from Mother Nature the heavens open as the first notes kick in.

Saturday morning and the heat is savage. A thin layer of clouds doesn’t stop the sun searing through that pesky hole in the ozone layer. Traditionally today is when attendees must wear fancy dress. One group dress as a news reporting crew. Every five minutes one snaps “action”, another heaves a cardboard camera on their shoulder and another dressed as a 70s news anchor starts chattering nonsense.

Afterwards a woman in a business suit asks anyone in the background to sign a fake release form. With a collective sense of humour as dry as the farmland they stand on, the release forms are signed and the group gallivant off only to repeat the process a few minutes later.

- - -

- - -

Another group dressed as chefs lounge on a sofa. It’s only later, overhearing a conversation, that it all makes sense.

“How ya feeling, Jono?”
“Yeah pretty cooked mate. What about you?”
Takes a drag of a joint. “Yeah I’m baked.”

This light-hearted silliness is the essence of Meredith. The best acts of the festival “get the boot.” When an act blows you away, you take your shoe off and wave it in the air to show your appreciation. 4pm and the calm is interrupted by “Meredith Festival!!! I’m *Nadia Rose* and I’m from South London!”

Dressed in paramedic trousers and a fluorescent matching crop top the Croydon gal explodes onstage. Her talent is raw and her confidence bulletproof as she belts out banger after banger, gyrating to 'Tight Up' and 'Skwod' with irresistible charisma.

“Let’s bring it up a gear shall we!” On comes BOOM! And the crowd loses it. A couple of chefs dangle from a tree and the News Anchor stands ‘70s wig askew, punching the air with his microphone. People can’t get their shoes off quick enough.

- - -

- - -

By evening it’s clear the female acts are dominating Meredith. *Sampa the Great *steps up to the role of global superstar expertly pumping the crowd up for songs including 'Blue Boss' and 'F E M A L E'.

*Mildlife’s* set gets the most shoes of the festival. The Meredith veterans push boundaries with their irresistible, indefinable slow indie music, harnessing the energy of the crescendoing crowd with 'Zwango Zwop', 'The Gloves Don’t Bite' and 'I'm Blau', expertly improvising between each song. The Meredith Light Show kicks off at 11pm.

We gaze up as pounding base rhythms resound over the ‘Sup. A light, hazy rain starts to fall as blue, green, red lasers penetrate the night sky, setting alight the Giant Pines in an almost over-stimulating experience.

As the laser show ends *The Presets* enter stage, seizing the energy of the crowd and officially transitioning Meredith Festival from disarray to pure carnage. A table holding a group of friends dressed as underwater creatures collapses midway through Martini - they continue dancing in a pile on the floor. Aunty Meredith spares a thought for our mindsets on Sunday. She’s arranged sets from Time for Dreams, Ooga Boogas and more to give us time to recover from our hungover haze.

The final hurrah of the festival manifests in The Meredith Gift - a nude race that anyone can enter to see out the festival in style. Sofas are dragged out the way to make room for a racetrack spanning the circumference of the ‘Sup. As a blur of butts, penises and boobs shoot past, the crowd cheers and whoops encouragement - a fitting finale to a festival that refuses to take life too seriously.

Two chefs sum it up over a final beer on their now wrecked sofa. “I might be absolutely fried mate - but that was fuckin’ incredible.”

Coalition Hails Passage of Legislation as Key Milestone in Protecting Victims of Domestic Violence and their Pets

Nestle Purina PetCare, Bayer Corporation, Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI), Noah’s Animal House, Pet Partners, and Urban Resource Institute celebrate inclusion of Pet and Women Safety Act language in just-passed Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018

WASHINGTON (PRWEB) December 21, 2018

A group of nonprofit and for-profit organizations lauded the passage of the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018 (the Farm Bill) after advocating for legislation to better protect domestic violence survivors by establishing the critical importance of protecting their pets, too. With the inclusion of key elements of the Pet and Women Safety (PAWS) Act (H.R. 909, S.322) in the Farm Bill, Congress took an essential step in removing a roadblock to the safety of these survivors with pets.

“Thanks to bipartisan passage of the PAWS Act by Congress, more domestic violence shelters will allow survivors of abuse to heal with the love and support of their beloved pets,” said Nina Leigh Krueger, President of Purina. “This is an important milestone in the coalition’s collective efforts to create safer communities for pets and pet owners, and Purina will remain steadfast in our commitment to keeping pets and people together, particularly during times of crisis.”

This provision of the Farm Bill establishes grants for domestic violence shelters to carry out programs to provide emergency and transitional shelter and housing assistance or short-term shelter and housing assistance for domestic violence victims with pets, service animals, emotional support animals, or horses. Grants awarded may also be used for programs that provide support services designed to enable someone fleeing domestic violence to locate and secure safe housing with their pet, safe accommodations for their pet, or related services such as transportation and other assistance.

The PAWS Act Coalition would like to thank the original co-sponsors of the Pet and Women Safety Act for their leadership and commitment to its passage, especially the lead sponsors Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA-5), Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) and Senator Dean Heller (R-NV). The Coalition is also particularly grateful for Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) for spearheading the effort to pass the bill by including its language in the Farm Bill.

“No one should have to make the choice between finding safety and staying in a violent situation to protect their pet,” said Congresswoman Katherine Clark (D-MA-5). “This law empowers survivors with the resources to leave a dangerous situation while being able to continue to care for their pet. I’m grateful for the partnerships we’ve formed between organizations working to end both domestic violence and animal abuse. Together, we will help save lives.”

“The PAWS Act Coalition looks forward to working with federal agencies to support implementation of this new law and to helping raise awareness of this important legislation among the domestic violence shelter and pet care communities,” said Steven Feldman, Executive Director of the Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI). “Our work is far from over, but this victory is the momentum needed towards real, life-saving change for domestic violence survivors and the pets that bring them so much joy and comfort.”

Organizations in the PAWS Act coalition include:· Purina (Nestlé Purina PetCare)
· Bayer Corporation
· Human Animal Bond Research Institute (HABRI)
· Noah’s Animal House
· Pet Partners
· Urban Resource Institute

Two of these organizations, Noah’s Animal House and Urban Resource Institute are just a couple of the only 3% of domestic violence shelters across the country who are working to keep both pets and their owners away from the dangers of domestic abuse. Together these two incredible organizations have saved more than 1,500 pets from abusive conditions, so that no domestic violence survivor is forced to choose between staying in an abusive relationship and leaving their pet with their abuser.

Did you know?· Up to 65% of domestic violence victims remain in abusive situations out of fear for their pets’ safety.
· According to the Centers for Disease Control, 4,774,000 women in the United States experience physical violence by an intimate partner every year.
· The majority of domestic violence situations include pets in the household, and 85% of women residing in domestic violence shelters reported a pet was harmed by their abuser.
· A growing body of science has demonstrated a link between domestic violence and animal cruelty. An outlet of emotional support for victims, the family pet often becomes a target for physical abuse.

“As we’ve seen throughout the past five years of running URI’s PALS (People and Animals Living Safely) Program, abusers often threaten to harm or inflict violence on a pet in order to control their victims,” said Nathaniel Fields, President and CEO of URI. “Not only do pet-friendly domestic violence shelters provide a critical avenue for escape, but they also channel the healing power of the human-pet bond during times of crisis and transition. The passage of the Farm Bill is an exciting milestone in this coalition’s work to ensure that all individuals facing abuse and their beloved pets can live the safest, fullest lives possible.”

“Since 2007, Noah’s Animal House has cared for over 1,400 pets of domestic violence victims from 21 states across the U.S, in addition to our home state of Nevada. Women drove thousands of miles from Florida, Oklahoma, Maine, Texas and others, driving past other women’s shelters in every state for one reason only - their pet had to be included in their escape plan” stated Staci Columbo Alonso, founder of Noah’s Animal House. “With the passing of the PAWS Act, more local women’s shelters can become pet friendly.”

“Survivors of domestic violence should not have to choose between their safety and a loved one,” said Lauren Dorsch, Deputy Director, Communications, Bayer Animal Health, “and this legislation is an important move toward supporting shelters in their efforts to provide a safe place for survivors to heal without saying goodbye to their pets.”

“In support of the PAWS Act Coalition, Pet Partners grassroots advocates made their voices heard during every step of the legislative process – recruiting key co-sponsors in the Senate, supporting passage of the Senate Farm Bill, targeting members of the Conference Committee, and building support in communities across the country. Thanks to their efforts, many thousands of constituent messages, tweets, and phone calls to Congress were made emphasizing the importance of these provisions. Pet Partners is grateful for their actions that will help pets and people remain together in traumatic situations – when they need each other most,” said Annie Peters, CEO of Pet Partners.
