HOUSTON — Canada leaves Houston with some questions and regrets but also a lot of positives after finishing runner-up to the U.S. at the CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Championship.

In the wake of last summer's World Cup, coach John Herdman identified a need for a left centre-back and additional pace and creativity on the wings and up front.

By infusing young talent into his squad, he has deepened his roster and helped address those issues. But youth needs time to blossom... // Read Full Article Reported by CJME 16 hours ago.

Here’s How The Government Could Close The Staggering Racial Wealth Gap

Kaelyn Thompson lives paycheck to paycheck. She graduated at the top of her high school class and, despite the financial struggles of her parents, decided to attend college.

“Not only did my mother make it clear that I had no choice, I also realized that I would never be able to make a good enough living to do more than just survive without a college degree,” Thompson wrote in a blog for The Huffington Post. “Though my mother demanded I go to college, she and my stepfather really had no way of supporting me financially to help me get there. They had their hands full and were still living paycheck to paycheck so it was up to me to make it happen.”

Making it happen required Thompson to take out loans she couldn’t afford and work multiple jobs she couldn’t juggle with classwork, which resulted in her having to take time off from school. Her credit score took a severe hit and, soon after, payday loans became the only way she could keep her lights on.

“Three years, two car repossessions, and one eviction later -- after being laid off and pulling out a few too many payday loans so I won't go without lights -- and I AM STILL trying to just fucking finish school,” she wrote.

Her misery contributes statistically to one of the most profound manifestations of systemic racism in the U.S.: the racial wealth gap.

In 2013, when the most recent federal survey was conducted, the difference in net worth between the typical black and white families was $131,000 -- the highest it's been since 1989. The poorest black families are far, far poorer than the poorest white families: 25 percent of black families had less than $5 in savings compared to $375 or less for the bottom quarter of white families. This chart didn’t fall from the sky. It was made by policies.

The racial wealth gap exists “largely as the result of policies that were put in place almost from the start of our country that benefited only portions of the population, not everyone,” Beadsie Woo of the Annie E. Casey Foundation, a nonprofit that focuses on child welfare and economic opportunity, told HuffPost.

That’s not an isolated or fringe view. “The U.S. racial wealth gap is ... driven by public policy decisions,” a recent study from researchers at Brandeis University and the think tank Demos concluded.

Slavery is only the most obvious of dozens of laws that kept African-Americans from building wealth. Homestead programs before and after slavery was abolished benefitted only white Americans, Woo said. For decades, unions were legally allowed to exclude blacks from organized labor. "A more recent policy that excluded people," added Woo, "would be the benefits to veterans after WWII for qualifying for mortgages but also for post-secondary education."

Homeownership as a wealth creator was largely and intentionally limited to white Americans for decades through “redlining” rules, which segregated neighborhoods by race, and discriminatory lending. Homeownership for excluded Americans was the egalitarian dream of the post-2000 housing boom. Needless to say, it didn’t work out. In the frenzy of the housing bubble in 2006, 47 percent of mortgages to Hispanics and 53 percent of mortgages to African-Americans were subprime, nearly double the rate for whites. Importantly, credit scores alone cannot explain this disparity.

The foreclosure crisis was racially tinged and erased huge sums of African-American wealth. Median black wealth was cut in half by the Great Recession, Richard Reeves and Edward Rodrigue of the Brookings Institute noted.

So what can be done?

The biggest, and one of the longest standing, ideas to narrow the racial wealth gap is reparations. Ta-Nehisi Coates laid out the basis for such a policy in his essay "The Case For Reparations," winning praise and the title of genius. But as Coates himself would probably readily admit, persuasion is back-breaking work: Only six percent of whites were in favor of cash payments to the descendants of enslaved Africans, according to a June 2014 HuffPost/YouGov poll.

Eric G. Miller, a professor at Loyola Law School, told HuffPost that “targeted race-based distribution of resources are vital to break the cycle of racial subordination in this country.”

“It’s recognizing that class has racially specific aspects," he said. "So reparations is in part communication of the ways in which race-based subordination and domination is a part of the fabric."

Almost every policy is small-bore compared to reparations, but a recent proposal from the Annie E. Casey Foundation could narrow the racial wealth gap in an important way. The nonprofit suggests things like promoting already existing retirement programs anyone can use, expanding welfare programs and increasing funding for certain housing programs.

But the most significant policy proposed by the Casey Foundation is creating savings accounts for every child at birth, and letting family and friends contribute alongside targeted government deposits. If the accounts have $60,000 by the time the kids are 18 to 34 year olds, the racial wealth gap is closed by as much as 80 percent in that age group.

“It’s a big, bold idea but even with more modest investments it still has an effect for families that would otherwise not be able to save,” Woo said.

Closing the racial wealth gap among young people is incredibly important, Laura Sullivan, a senior research associate at the Brandeis University team that calculated the impact of the children’s savings accounts, told HuffPost.

“Having wealth early in life provides opportunities,” Sullivan said. “Whether it’s a downpayment on a home or a college education. Wealth breeds and builds wealth.”

Connecticut Becomes Second State To Officially End Veteran Homelessness

In the nationwide fight to end homelessness, one state is celebrating a rare victory: ending homelessness for all veterans.

Connecticut is the second state in the country, after Virginia, to end homelessness for its veterans, Governor Dan Malloy announced to WNPR last week.

“The most important thing you can do for a family is to give it a safe home, a decent home,” said the governor to the radio station, “a home that you can sustain yourself and your family in.”

The governor explained that the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) called him last week to confirm the state’s status as having ended homelessness for veterans.

This doesn't mean you'll never see another homeless veteran in Connecticut. It means that the state has met the official criteria for ending homelessness, as laid out by the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness.

The state must be able to "quickly" find permanent housing for any future homeless veteran (i.e. within 90 days), and the state must have more veterans exiting homelessness, at any point, than the number entering homelessness. The only exceptions are veterans who have been offered housing and have refused it.

These benchmarks are meant to ensure that any future instances of veteran homelessness are "rare, brief, and non-recurring."

This is the second major milestone for Connecticut in the fight against homelessness: this summer it became the first state ever to end chronic homelessness for veterans.

Chronic homelessness is the more “long-term, pernicious” form of the issue, Brian Sullivan, HUD public affairs specialist, explained to the Huffington Post in November. Chronic homelessness involves being homeless for a year or longer, or more than four times in three years, according to HUD.

The success of the veteran housing program is due to statewide collaboration between the housing department, partners at veteran’s affairs, and people working at shelters, the Connecticut governor told WNPR.

Two years ago, the governor set ambitious goals to end homelessness, according to a state press release, including improving existing residential options for veterans and building new affordable housing units.

“We signed on in 2014 that we would end homelessness amongst veterans by the end of last year,” he said to the radio station. “And we did it.”

Other communities nationwide are committing to end veteran homelessness as part of Michelle Obama’s Mayors Challenge to End Homelessness, launched in June 2014.

“The percentage of veterans who are homeless today is just .3 percent of the total veteran population,” said Michelle Obama during the announcement. “But even one homeless veteran is a shame.”

So far, only 21 communities and two states have put the systems in place to end veteran homelessness, according to HUD. And only a handful of cities have actually reached the goal of ending veteran homelessness, according to a White House page, including Houston, New Orleans, Las Vegas and Syracuse. Connecticut is only the second state, after Virginia, to do so.

Across the country, almost 48,000 veterans were homeless on any given night in January 2015, according to HUD.

Redefining Sepsis: An International Effort to Improve Patient Outcomes

In series of JAMA articles, scientists from UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh help bring clarity to this deadly syndrome.

Pittsburgh, Pa. (PRWEB) February 22, 2016

UPMC and University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine doctors played a central role in a worldwide effort to redefine the No. 1 killer of hospital patients: sepsis.

In a series of articles published today in the Journal of the American Medical Association, an international task force updated definitions of sepsis and septic shock, which were last revised in 2001. These new definitions help bring clarity to sepsis, a syndrome that is difficult for doctors to diagnose and deadly for patients. The task force definitions were directly informed by research out of the Clinical Research, Investigation, and Systems Modeling of Acute Illness (CRISMA) Center at the Pitt School of Medicine and were funded in part by grants from the National Institutes of Health.

In accompanying articles published today in the journal Critical Care Medicine, Pitt scientists also present a conceptual framework to help patients, clinicians, researchers and hospitals apply the new definitions. The results are being presented at the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s annual meeting in Orlando, Fla.

Sepsis is a condition that arises when the body’s response to an infection injures its own tissues and organs, sometimes progressing to septic shock. It may occur in up to 2 million U.S. patients every year, and, despite best practice, more than 1 in 10 sepsis patients do not survive.

“Considerable advances have been made in the study and care of sepsis and septic shock in the past 15 years, and there is an urgent need to help the medical community do a better job identifying septic patients quickly and start life-saving treatment,” said Derek C. Angus, M.D., M.P.H., the Dr. Mitchell P. Fink Professor and chair of Pitt’s Department of Critical Care Medicine. “Put simply, sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction due to a dysregulated response of the patient’s immune system to infection. Our intent is that this definition results in greater consistency for epidemiologic studies, clinical trials and – perhaps most important – better recognition and more timely management of patients with, or at risk of developing, sepsis.”

Two years ago, the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine and the Society of Critical Care Medicine convened a task force of 19 critical care, infectious disease, surgical and pulmonary specialists. They noted considerable advances in the pathophysiology, management and epidemiology of sepsis, suggesting a need for re-examination of the definition. The team included both Dr. Angus, who also is a distinguished professor at Pitt and director of the CRISMA Center, and Christopher W. Seymour, M.D., M.Sc., assistant professor in Pitt’s departments of Critical Care Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Both also are practicing physicians with UPMC.

“Because sepsis is so complex, patients can present in many different ways. This can lead to delays in care and missed opportunities. The updated definition was crafted to help doctors and hospitals sort through the many sepsis symptoms and get to the diagnosis quickly,” said Dr. Seymour. “Unlike prior attempts to define sepsis, the task force sought data from real patients to inform their deliberations.”

The new criteria include the “quick Sepsis-related Organ Failure Assessment,” or qSOFA, to help clinicians diagnose septic patients and get treatment started outside the intensive care unit. It uses only three symptoms: altered mental status, fast respiratory rate and low blood pressure, and does not require blood tests. If patients with infection show two of the three criteria, they should be considered likely to be septic. Such patients account for more than 3 out of 4 infection-related deaths. The qSOFA prompt was developed by analyzing more than 800,000 electronic health record encounters at 177 hospitals worldwide, including academic, community, public, private and federal hospitals.

“This is the one of the largest collaborative studies ever conducted in the field of critical care medicine,” said Dr. Seymour. “The study results and Task Force Consensus definitions are endorsed by more than 25 professional medical and academic societies around the globe. And as doctors and hospitals adopt the updated definition, there is the potential to more promptly recognize thousands of patients at risk of becoming, or who already are, septic. ”

In addition to Drs. Angus and Seymour, who are lead or senior authors on several of the publications, and Jeremy Kahn, M.D., M.S., co-author, Pitt Department of Critical Care Medicine, other authors come from Kaiser Permanente, University of Michigan, Veterans Affairs Center for Clinical Management Research, Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Research Centre, University College London, Guy’s and St. Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust in the UK, University of Versailles, Jena University Hospital in Germany, Monash University in Australia, Vanderbilt University, Descartes University in France, Emory University, Washington University, Brown University, University of Toronto, Academisch Medisch Centrum in the Netherlands, Erasme University Hospital in Belgium, Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children’s Medical Center in New York, New York State Health Department, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Research Institute.

This work was supported by grants from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, National Institute of General Medical Sciences grants GM104022 and GM107650 and National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute grant HL123020. Vets for Bernie: Why Thousands of Veterans Are Rallying Behind an Unexpected Candidate

$

Bernie Sanders applied for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War. He is a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, and he decries the Military Industrial Complex that so many veterans have been a part of.

It may come as a surprise then, that thousands and thousands of veterans are "feeling the Bern," as Sanders' supporters are proud to proclaim. So what is it about this Senator from Vermont that has veterans passionately fighting for his election?

Sanders is and has been one of the most vocal champions for active duty service members, veterans, and veteran's rights for the last three decades.

That's right -- the democratic socialist from Vermont, who applied for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War, has been standing up for veterans for a long, long time -- and Veterans have taken notice.

Many vets believe that Sanders has shown great leadership and judgment in his opposition to United States-led actions around the globe; from the first Gulf War, to his infamous opposition of the invasion of Iraq which he predicted would lead to the destabilization of the region and the rise of unpredictable insurgencies. In 2002, then Congressman Sanders spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives, saying:
I have not heard any estimates of how many young American men and women might die in such a war, or how many tens of thousands of women and children in Iraq might also be killed. As a caring nation, we should do everything we can to prevent the horrible suffering war will cause. War must be the last recourse.....[And] who will govern Iraq when Saddam Hussein is removed? And what role will the US play in an ensuing civil war that will develop in that country? Will moderate governments in the region who have large Islamic fundamentalist populations be overthrown and replaced by extremists?
With the rise of ISIS and the further collapse of neighboring countries in the region, recent history has shown us that Senator Sanders was right to be cautious.
I voted against the war in Iraq--and not only did I vote against it, I helped lead the effort. Many of the things that I said back then turned out to be true--the massive destabilization of the region.
But veterans say that, even more than his willingness to speak up when the country is heading down the wrong path, it is his steadfast support for returning warriors that earn him their loyalty. Over the years, Sanders has been integral in getting key legislation passed to improve and extend benefits for our service members, veterans, and their families. He has received bipartisan praise from key members of the Republican Party, including Senator John McCain of Arizona, who says that he and Sanders "were able to come together and come and pass legislation that was nearly unanimous in both House and Senate. So he does have a record of advocacy for our veterans."

...

It is time for full disclosure. I am a veteran of the Iraq War, and I too am "feeling the Bern." I have the names of six Marines tattooed on my right arm. They lost their lives fighting in the streets of Iraq, fighting in a war that never should have been. Since returning, I've lost two more friends to suicide.

I am proud to support a candidate for president that has been on the front lines fighting for veterans and active duty service members for decades.

He may not be the candidate you'd expect thousands of us to throw our support behind, but we know firsthand the costs of war, and we know an ally to our cause when we see one. In Senator Sanders, we have the chance to elect a Commander in Chief who will think twice before sending our sons and daughters off to war and a President who understands that we are morally obligated to care for them upon their return.
If you are not prepared to take care of the men and women who put their lives on the line to defend this country - who came back wounded in body, wounded in spirit - if you're not prepared to help those people, then don't send them to war in the first place.

ZPower is providing veterans with better hearing solutions through their innovative, high performance, and rechargeable silver-zinc microbatteries.

Camarillo, Calif. (PRWEB) February 22, 2016

ZPower, the world’s only developer of rechargeable, silver-zinc miniature batteries, will feature its Rechargeable System for Hearing Aids at the 2016 Joint Defense Veterans Audiology Conference (JDVAC), February 22nd-24th in St. Louis, MO. ZPower will exhibit in booth #TT23 and Dr. Barry A. Freeman, VP of Business Development, will lead a JDVAC Tech Talk, ZPower: A Rechargeable Solution, February 23rd at 2pm.

Silver-zinc battery technology has a fascinating history; it was first developed for the military and NASA, and early rechargeable silver-zinc batteries were used for Apollo missions. These early batteries took advantage of silver-zinc’s high energy density, but they weren’t commercially viable because of the limited number of recharges each battery could accept.

ZPower has been able to solve this problem. Through nearly two decades of research, ZPower has developed a proprietary rechargeable silver-zinc battery that can be fully recharged over 400 times, and offers the highest energy density of any rechargeable microbattery. Now, ZPower is excited to bring their rechargeable silver-zinc battery technology to the hearing industry.

“We’re committed to serving our Veterans and Active Duty Service Members with better hearing solutions,” said retired Air Force officer Dr. Ross E. Dueber, President and CEO at ZPower. “Frequently handling tiny batteries is difficult and frustrating for many hearing aid wearers, and especially for those with diminished dexterity and sight. With our rechargeable solution, there are no hard-to-remove battery tabs and no need to ever handle batteries.”

ZPower’s Rechargeable System for Hearing Aids is an innovative product that makes it easy to convert many new and existing hearing aids to rechargeable technology. The ZPower Rechargeable System offers a full day of continuous power, charges overnight in the hearing aids, takes the place of an estimated 200 disposable batteries, and lasts a full year. The ZPower hearing aid batteries are replaced once per year by a hearing care professional so the patient never has to touch a hearing aid battery again.

Charlene Spencer, a Veteran and ZPower System user wrote, “I love my ZPower. Not only because of the easy charging but because the batteries last all day. I am truly, truly, pleased. Thank you!”

The Crockett Foundation, a non-profit organization that helps veterans and retired military service dogs has teamed up with Four Legendary Pro Wrestlers.

Charlotte, NC (PRWEB) February 23, 2016

The Crockett Foundation has teamed up with 4 legendary pro wrestlers in order to help the Crockett Foundation’s mission to better the lives of Veterans and Retired Military Service Dogs. The four wrestlers in the newly formed Crockett Foundation “Tag Team Partners” are Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat, Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson aka The Rock “n” Roll Express and Nickla “Baby Doll” Roberts.

“When the Crockett Foundation approached me about their cause it was an instant yes for me,” said Ricky Steamboat. “People don’t realize how many veterans are coming back from duty and have absolutely no assistance, we are going to do everything we can to change that.”

The Crockett Foundation focuses its efforts on helping veterans and veteran’s organizations that strive to better the lives of veterans and make life more manageable while he or she suffers from mental illnesses or injury suffered in their service to our country. They help provide PTSD trained service dogs, musical instruments for the Veteran’s music programs and even yoga mats for the yoga programs that are now being used to relieve PTSD symptoms, just to name a few.

The charity also focuses efforts on retired active-duty service dogs by securing the proper care and treatment they so need and deserve. It is a little known fact that there is no financial assistance for these dogs once they are discharged and settle into retirement. The veterans that give these dogs a loving home through his or her golden years are solely responsible for the medical care of the four-legged heroes. The Foundation is actively contacting veterinary clinics and hospitals so that veterans know we are here to help.

“I had no idea that the military dogs got no assistance once they return from service,” said Nickla “Baby Doll” Roberts. “These animals are heroes and it’s very disheartening that they get no assistance after their service-time is over.”

To commemorate the 85th Anniversary of Jim Crockett Promotions, alongside the announcement of the first four legends to join the Crockett Foundation Tag Team, they will be releasing a limited edition t-shirt featuring each of the 4 new partners.

In 2015 the Foundation has donated $180,000,000 to charitable causes. You can help the foundation in a couple different ways.·     Make a donation directly on the Crockett Foundation website. CrockettFoundation.com/donate

·     Purchase custom gear at the Crockett Foundation’s online store. A portion of all sales goes directly towards helping a veteran in need. CrockettFoundation.com/store

“Robert (Gibson) and I spent decades in the spotlight and as heroes in the eyes of our fans. We’re very excited to be Tag Team Partners with The Crockett Foundation and now helping in the fight for America’s real heroes who sacrificed their health for each and every one of us” Said Ricky Morton.

The Crockett Foundation was founded by Jim and Elizabeth Crockett in the 1970s and has always been focused on helping those with mental health issues. In 2015 after poignant interactions with some of this country’s 2 legged and 4 legged heroes, the Foundation’s current President Debbie Ringley Mrozinski, the oldest grandchild of Jim and Elizabeth Crockett, refocused the Foundations efforts. Debbie watched her family’s business grow first hand, while doing everything from lowering and raising the microphone at Park Center wrestling matches to making popcorn at Crockett Park in Charlotte, NC. Others on the team include Advisor To The Board, Frances Crockett Ringley, the oldest child of Jim and Elizabeth Crockett, Vice President, Roberta Doss, daughter of a veteran and Secretary, Ginger Shutt, granddaughter of a veteran. Purpose-built system will simplify consumer directed research via Harmony Aging and Disabilities Resource Center software.

Lenexa, KS (PRWEB) February 23, 2016

Mediware Information Systems Inc., the leader in integrated health and human services management, announced that the Iowa Department on Aging (IDA) selected Harmony Aging and Disabilities Resource Center (ADRC) software to meet their state-wide “No-Wrong Door” (NWD) initiative.

Once implemented Harmony Aging and Disabilities resource center software will be used by Iowans across the state to identify and select qualified services and state authorized providers. No Wrong Door initiatives serve as entry points to publicly administered long-term supports, including those funded under Medicaid, the Older Americans Act, Veterans Health Administration and other state programs. The Iowa Department on Aging seeks to remove silos and create a single, state-wide integrated network to access information regarding Long-Term Services and Supports. This includes key partnerships with the Department of Transportation, Iowa Medicaid Enterprise, and Iowa Department of Human Services-Bureau of Mental Health and Disabilities Services.

“Harmony Aging and Disabilities Resource Center software will assist the Iowa Department on Aging to empower thousands of individuals and families across the state,” said Todd Bransford, General Manager of Mediware Human and Social Services. “This will help Iowans to quickly breeze through the maze of organizations and regulatory requirements that often confront them when they are most vulnerable. They can quickly identify the services they qualify for and the authorized providers they can select from to deliver the necessary service. Mediware is pleased that the Iowa Department of Aging -- an existing Harmony customer -- has once again placed their trust in us to bring this powerful tool to the fingertips of consumers across the entire state.”

Mediware’s Harmony Aging and Disabilities Resource Center software has been deployed in over 14 statewide implementations. It will provide a single point-of-entry for Iowans who may start their search for support services from many different state organizations. It facilitates consistent information, call tracking, benefits counseling, options counseling, care transitions guidance and efficient access to Long-Term Supports and Services (LTSS). Once implemented, this solution will offer Iowans a public facing web resource directory that allows for immediate and ongoing collaboration among ADRC providers and partners. To maximize the positive impact on consumers an online pre-screen self-assessment will facilitate service provisioning for them while the Information and Referral module will track and provide valuable data and feedback for the Iowa Department on Aging.
